So mine has the same problems as they all do but it is what we paid for. I love it great little gun shot some skeet with it it's alright as long as you don't take your time!

I was going to make a new fore stock for it and was looking at the latch mech. It seams too long. Or feather the block was attached too close to the breach. It looks like If the screw position that connects the two metal pieces was moved back a little (making it shorter) the latch would engage fully and should be very solid. I'm going to try this. Worse case I have an extra hole. Maybe it's the permeant fix. Anyone else look at this?

I wondered about chokes too. Anyone have any experience with chokes on a barrel this short? There is enough grizzlys out there some one has to be able to comment on added effectiveness of choking something this short.

I wanted the the gun for my northern kayak trips as defence and possible use for hunting.

Is your forend loose? I bought one of the original batches a few years ago and mine was loose and would come off until I put a small piece of self adhesive weather stripping foam in the barrel channel. It's been great ever since.
Mine has a nice thick barrel so threading for chokes would be easy. I don't have much experience with chokes and short barrels but by all accounts chokes are not affected by barrel length.
The other necessary modifications I did was smooth out some of the sharp edges of the metal, re shape the pistol grip area of the stock and raise the bead to get the point of aim in line with the point of impact.
It's a good useable gun now but I ended up buying one of Corwin's little short 12G that he was selling a while back and for backpacking I'd take it over the backpacker as it is quite a bit lighter having an alloy receiver and plastic stock. It doesn't break down like the backpacker but it's so compact it's not a big deal.

Mine is a single unit from the first batch so I can't speak for the second and third batch or every unit.
I'll see if I can find a picture, I think I posted it a few years ago.... the strip is about and inch and half long and I think it was located forward of the mechanism in the barrel channel of the foreend. Basically you are shimming the slop out of the fit so take a look at how and where you have movement and shim as needed. You could start with some folded paper and play with thickness and location of if you have some weather stripping around cut a piece and try it without peeling back the adhesive cover until you find the right size and location.

Couldn't find a foreend picture but here's my temp/permanent raised bead and a look at the muzzle meat for choke threading. The second picture shows where I reshaped the stock and some sights I was considering but have not installed.
