DA grizzly - thread damage

I was replacing the forestock on my 12.5", and whilst hammering the tube that holds the transfer bars, out of the old 870 wood furniture, I damaged the threads on the first two turns.

Didn't have the issue the last time I changed the forestock, as I used a socket head that fit perfect, I now the remington furniture is a tighter fit and DA.
Unfortunately I had lent my full socket set to a fella and improvised, now the ring that holds the forearm on, won't catch the threads.

It more or less squashed the first two threads together. I filed down the first thread and tried to cut a starting point after the last bit of damage but so far I haven't been able to retread the ring back on.

I know I could recut the threads with a die be was hoping there was a simpler solution.

I know from cutting bolts, to always leave a nut before your cut and just make a few passes with the nut and it squares it up but it's too late for that.

Has anyone run into this problem before?

The DA forend tube is slightly larger than the 870. As a result, Rem OEM forends benefit from a bit of sanding internally to prevent needing excessive force when installing or removing.
Sorry, I don't have a solution to the damaged threads.

Yeah I had sanded the old fore arm I was removing slightly when I installed it previously, but it was still a snug fit.

I'm going to continue filing slowly until I can thread the retaining nut back on.
Failing that I'll keep an eye out on the EE.

Thanks.

My first idea would be to get a triangular needle file and carefully recut the damaged thread. You should be able to see the damaged area that's causing misthreading. Put extra attention to the exact area where the threads begin to bite. This has worked for me on lots of different issues. Princess auto also sells a threading tool that looks kind of like a mini pipe cutter. It has blades that fit into your threads, then you tighten the tool and wind it around the damaged threads. Haven't used this last item before.
