On another forum the 590 was being discussed . I didn't know there were two versions . One has a heavier barrel than the other which the military specified . One of the posters had a comment i'd never heard of . He's saying that the heavy barreled version has more going for it . It's a double action . The civi version is a single action . Stroke the slide , a round gets loaded , the hammer gets cocked and you fire . The heavy barrel version , being double action , stroke the slide , a round gets loaded but the hammer doesn't get cocked . Pull the double action trigger and the round fires but being double action you can pull the trigger again for a second strike if needed . Any truth to that ?

The "DA" is so the trigger pull feels like the DA pull of an officers pistol.
Having the trigger a little heavier and longer as well as similar to the duty side arm is seen to be safer for police work.
The idea is to avoid negligent discharges not hit the primer twice.
