DA SOCOM 18 optic options

I'm thinking of putting a small optic on my M14 SOCOM shorty. What are the best options? I've seen red-dots mounted on the hand guard that look cool, but I don't know how they mount. Thoughts?

Springfield armoury scout mount . Comes with a handguard with a cut out.The mount clamps to the barrel and is good for scout scopes and red dots.M14.ca also makes an excellent railed handguard. I used the springfield mount to mount a 4x leupold ler pistol scope on my DA socom and it works well

I like the M14.ca mount. Inexpensive and local.
