Hows everyone doing? Its been a while since I posted (i lurk from time to time though) since im uber busy with school and thesis which I should be working on right now, but I had to find out more about this gun!

Well a fellow who is a good friend of my fathers dropped of a nice mauser today (not sure if he's giving it to me or not) but i snapped a few shots of it. I kept hoping since he told me about it around a year ago that it would be a nice vet bringback in original shape with perhaps a nice rare code like bsw or 660 well turns out its a 44 sauer and sohn with no numbers that match from what I can tell, not even the bolt to itself.

The front sight is odd to me and the barrel shank looks quite polished compared to the rest of the gun. The wood is sanded as the waff is barely visible and most parts look branks new in terms of bluing. Im pretty positive its a refurb but I just dunno by who. The bore is like new so it will likely make a great shooter. Im guessing this gun was once a gew? So is she a refurb? and if so by who? swasticas are not peened...

Oh yea forgot to say that this fellow had this gun under his bed for over 25 years and its a funny story how he aquired it. He said he was going to cut down the wood and sporter it becuase he thought it was ugly  thankfully that never happened!

looks to be an east german rework, from what the sights tell me, is there a police star on it?

mk2 is a refurb marking, but i dont know by who.

but nice rifle indeed, too bad about the sanding however.

hows the action for a 44?

The front sight looks like half of a flip-up winter muzzle cover - without the flap. I had one once, and I think International Military Imports (dub dub dub imi-usa.com) sells think.

The finish and stock work could be anyone 25+ years ago. The drill then was to cut and chop, not polish and primp.

All WWI German Mausers are GEW for Gewehr 98, WWII rifles are Kar98 for Karbiner 98. If it has mid war dates, it can't be a WWI rifle.

Unsmashed waffenampts are a definate plus. For some people they represent undesirable things (and I'm not disagreeing one bit), but for a collector these were the authentic markings when it left the plant. That is the kind of condition collectors look for.

Yeah, I am with Sigismund, looks like a VoPo rework. There are no serial numbers stamped into the non-bolt side of the stock a la Yugo or RC reworks and the metal appears to be reblued. The front sight looks Czech, extra parts used to refurb leftover K98's after the war.

Does the stock have a star marking at the bottom of the pistol grip? My Vopo K98 had a star on the side of the receiver by the serial (yours appears to not have) and one on the bottom of the stock at the grip.

If it is an East German rework, they are usually among the best refurbed K98's that you can get. Great shooters...

I have a BYF44 that I aquired in 1970, still in the wrap. It has the same front site protector, as did all of the other rifles in that and several other crates that I bought then. bearhunter

Those front sights are of Czech origin, though most VoPo refurbs have 'em too - probably bought from the czechs post-war.

If that isn't an East German refurb, I'll eat my hat. Has more sandign than most though - did your benefactor sand it himself?

Well long story short he recieved the rifle for lending a friend his mustang for a night to impress a girl...this friend supposedly got it from his dad which is why I thought it was a bringback...
