I would appreciate knowledgeable advice on these two models. The 853 is the class act with wood stock, good iron sights and the Walther barrel at about $400. The 953 is the plastic stock, regular sights, regular barrel for about 1/4 of the price. One person has told me that the 953 will shoot almost as well and is surprisingly accurate for the price. My use is informal plinking, not hunting or competitive shooting. However as a general premise, I have never regretted buying quality in the past. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

My experience is with the 853C. I coached a cadet team for a few years. Some of these rifles are very accurate, some not as much. I had the luxury of being able to swap out rifles one for one at cadet stores to find the most accurate ones.
The iron sights are actually plastic and do tend to break. Aperture sights are great for shooting round targets but wouldn't be of much use for just plinking pop cans and such.

I have not examined either rifle in my hands. Is there a qualitative difference in the feel? Also can optics be easily mounted on either rifle? Thanks.

I bought a used 853C a couple of years ago and really like it. In fact, I got my youngest kids shooting with mine. Aperture sights are actually pretty good for popping balloons at 25-30 yards, and knocking over pop cans at the same distance with some practice.

I didn't have any target shooting ambitions when I got mine, but had heard good things about their accuracy and wanted to try one. The cast receiver on mine is grooved for a scope, and I may add one to help keep my kids interested in air guns. The .22lr they've tried has a scope, and they like seeing the impact.

I should mention, mine didn't come with any of the stock extension pcs., so the LOP is actually pretty short. I'm 6'1", but actually like the carbine-like length of it, balances very well.
