Well the kid went and did it again..........another top 5 Dall for the book. He's already got #4 in Pope and Young and it looks like he's now got #3 or #4 and it will push his previous ram back to #5.

Opening afternoon, he arrowed this ram at a ranged 90 mtrs on a steep downhill shot, he shot over with his first arrow and the ram just turned around and gave him the opposing broadside to which he promptly placed a perfect shot right behind the shoulder. The ram ran over a little bluff and piled up then proceeded to rol and flop most of the way down into a steep and deep gorge. They couldn't get to him that night so they went back and moved camp around to the base of the gorge he was in and packed it in for the night. Next am the started their ascent to retrieve the ram and wouldn't you know it a grizzly had taken up residence about 50 mtrs below the dead sheep and just over a little knife ridge from it. Effectively blocking their approach, 3 shots from the shotgun had zero effect on the bear, so they decided to wait him out. After several hours they grew impatient and decided shouting and throwing rocks might be more effective, which it was and the bear finally vacated the area. They retrieved the ram and packed him down to camp packed up and boated back to the truck and home safe and sound by 10 pm last night.

Congratulations to your son! (And to you for raising him a hunter!)

Love the pics of the hunt, it is nice to see these remote areas of our beautiful country!

Very glad the bear did not eat the ram!!!

Cheers
Jay

Congratulations to your son, lucky guy to get the time to get out and having the health to hunting with great opportunities. Just out of curiosity does he have his name anywhere else in the Pope and Young book?

Congrats to your son on a great trophy!........and for making the P&Y book. I know the feeling when a son shoots a big trophy.

It's a resident only draw zone, bow only, and it's 20 minutes from Whitehorse. There are 2 distinct genetic strains on that ridge, the one you see in the pics and another real pinhead strain. There are 10 tags in the zone, but in the Yukon you can get drawn almost every year or every other as there just aren't many dedicated bowhunters up here.
I'm very proud of my son, that's the third Dall he's taken with a bow and all are P&Y, but to have 2 in the top 5 all time, is a feat no one else has ever accomplished!!! He truly is a helluva hunter and better than most I have seen. He's also better with a bow than I ever was, and I was quite accomplished at one time. I will give him his due though, when he gets his draw in the bow zone, he practices every day from 30-60 mtrs for at least a month in advance to the hunt. This trip he took a buddy for moral support and mule duties but last bowhunt for Dalls he went alone and packed the whole thing out himself in one pack, kinda reminds me of me.
This year he only took 2 days off work to get his ram, and will end up working Sunday to get a genset out Mon for a customer rental. Did I say I was REAL proud of my boy!!! It's been a very eventful day as #2 son broke his arm today and I had to make a flying trip to town to the hospital where I have been for the past 5 hours. I've got a headache................and I need a large glass of very good red wine and 2 Tylenol.................with codeine!!!!!

Douglas,

that s a nice place to go even not for hunting ... if you like bow hunting ... for sure maybe one day crossbow will be a bowhunting thing here ...

hope everything is good and fixed now for your second son ...

all the best.

Bearkilr........It seems as though the bear did not know the sheep was there, just coincidence, his proximity to the sheep. Wasn't able to save the cape though, too warm to leave overnight. Hair came out in handfuls the next afternoon, might have been OK if they could have got to him early in the am but the bear put the crunch to that so, it is what it is. Dall sheep capes are easy to come by in the Yukon regardless.

Boomer........isn't that how it's supposed to be, we raise our children to do better than we did? He also doesn't have the financial and family constraints I had at his age, so he is able to do more hunting than I ever could at that age. #2 son is resting peacefully as I type this and will be as good as new in a few weeks the Doc assured us. Very simple break and a perfect set, so no long lasting ill effects.

BUM............pretty sure he's not adopted as I think I would remember all the paperwork, which I hate. Besides which I was there when he popped out...........a hospital switch is possible I guess, but the Whitehorse maternity ward just isn't that overrun on any given day, or week for that matter. It is my opinion that he will be lucky to look as good as me, when he's my age, if he goes through even 1/2 of what I've been through.......LOL. I truly hope on the other hand, that YOU have made a conscious choice not to have children............
