Hello,

I just received an order of 1000 .45 ACP. It came as usual in a small box weighing almost 50 lb and individually packaged in 20 50 round boxes. My friends at UPS dropped this box HARD so when I opened it 16 of the 20 boxes showed damage ((I have a claim in). Upon opening the cases the impact was enough to crack the plastic shell holders in 17 of the 20 cases.

Anyway my question is related to safety. About 5 of the boxes took a hit from the end and had some bullets obviously pushed back deep into the shell. Now I know these ones are not safe to shoot due to pressure and bullet/chamber seating (right?). But some in the same cases show only a small difference from the rest (just slightly lower bullet seat than other .45 ammo I have).

Is it safe to shoot these ones? I don't have a micrometer so I can't say how much they are pushed in. Plus these are wolfe reloads in the first place and while checking all the boxes I found one or two that were lower than the rest in boxes that showed no damage at all, so is there an acceptable variance normally in these type of reloaded deals?

Thanks very much for your help,

UPS!:bangHead:

you get that "variance" all the time, and the 45 is a low pressure round , so i'd say go head and shoot it- being reloaded factories, they're nowhere near maximum, due to liability concerns- say about a 1/16th or so- as far as the deep ones are concerned, if it was me, i'd use a bullet puller, pull the bullet and re-seat it with the press- a simple enough job if you know someone with one

Thanks for the advice,

After sorting them all I only found around 30 that were below 1/16 " lower than a standard round, and only 5 or 6 that were pushed down too far to shoot.

I put "dangerous to ship back" on the claim form to UPS and they still showed up to take the package back? I'll have to take it to their depot to get it sorted out.

why would you do that?- they aren't- the ONLY way those are going to detonate is if someone hits the PRIMER with a nail or something- they're just regular loaded ammunition

I know they are not dangerous, I did it because I didn't want to pack them all up and have them drop the box again.

I am not anal about COAL, so I would shoot those slightly pushed in cartridges. YMMV. However, you paid good money for that case of ammo plus shipping.

Just file a claim (rather have your shipper file the claim). I hope shipment was insured. That is what insurance is for...to indemnify you for a loss.

Happened once to me when UPS dropped a pair of Cerwin Vega speakers...about 100 lbs each and too large to get a good grip on. Anyways, the seller claimed and refunded my money including shipping. UPS did not even look at the speakers....just took our word for it and didn't even get the damaged speakers...kept and used them about 5 years.

Any time I have had bullets seated deeper than I would like, I just bump them foreward with an inertia puller, and seat to depth. Don't pull the bullet out, just bump it foreward.
What are you claiming for? 30 rounds? The damaged trays? Damaged cardboard boxes? Seems to be a lot of bother.

ups as a shipper in nova scotia are scumbags and i try not to use them if i can avoid it. i have had so much trouble in the past with them that they have me on their bad list.

The next time they won't be shipping them, just in case some friggin idiot might drop them, why complain just shoot them. Not likely gonna hurt anybody but your pocket book????

Or maybe they just won't throw a 50lb box of ammo into the back of the truck from 3 feet away and I'll get what I actually pay for.
