Have a nork cqa1 and am going to put a ff tube on it , Been puting it off for a month or so and today I figered I would do it .............OK the damm Pins for the gas block wont budge , Broke 2 punchs and bent another !!!!
So I need some Ideas ,Heat ? freezer? what? , I smacked them good enough to break two punches ............ so where too go now ?

did you try a press as in hydraulic press.no press?use a vice with a socket on the side
the pin comes out and a high quality steel pin/punch/snap sanded down to a point.
if you have access to a rivet gun, compressor and snap sanded downn to a point
thatb might help.
ps i believe the pins are tapered...

Cut the existing block to clear the tube - ie remover the sight portion but leave the gas block, you will not get an aftermarket block that will be fixed half as well.

Nut wont fit over the gas block if cut the sight portion off , Trust me that was my first plan................ oh ya broke punch#3

tryed heat , broke 4th punch ,bent 5th punch & cut hand . hate this gas block it should not be this hard at all ! I am now out of punches F@cK

I think now I am looking for a new low profile gasblock or a new front sight that I can cut down. Do new gas block come with new taper pins?

If the small ends of the taper pins are proud of the gas block (they usually are) then the best way I've found to get them out is to use a short 5/16" diameter punch and a big hammer to get them moving. You need to support the gas block very well. I used to use a set of old AR15 barrel blocks in a 5" record vise. I would put the barrel into the barrel blocks upside down so that just the area where the Pins are is visible from the top edge of the barrel block. Start hammering until pin starts moving, and ends up flush with the edge of the gas block. It will then be loose enough that you can use a smaller punch to get the pins all the way out.

I can't stress enough how important it is to support the gas block so that it doesn't move around when hammering. If it moves, you won't get the shocking force necessary to break the pins loose.

Hope this helps.

This is one of those parts that was never actually meant to come off

I wonder if they freeze the pins in dry ice before installing them.

I remember 'considering' changing the gas block so that my 1.25-8 power scope wouldn't see the shadow of the front sight... Then I saw Mystic's thread...

So, my scope is set at 2x & I don't see the shadow...

Good Luck BCBoy!

Cheers
Jay

I had the same problem with Colt Barrels, sop I bought a Hydraulic press and had a special punch and chuck made for the press. Works like dream and more marring the finish on my gas blocks.

after hours of smashing with a hammer my gun smith finally drilled out the centerof the pins then punched it out, worked great. also try heating it up .good luck

I watch (someone else) struggle with mine too. He eventually drilled out the pins then punched them, if I remember correctly. All I could think was "i'm glad that isn't me".

I had a low profile block to put on after the original was removed (or destroyed).

where to get new gas block ? or front site that I can hack? Been a long time since I did one last , do they come with new pis as well?

I've seen there online here and there in Canada.

FreedomVentures has them
questar has them
ctcsupplies has them.

I'm sure at least 2 must be supporting vendors.

usually between $45-$55

I'm sure lots of other places have them too.
