in the northwest territories they changed the limits on caribou for resident hunters from 5 of any ### to 2 bulls. the rule change is fine but why change the rules on the guys who kill 500 caribou a year and not the ones who kill over 10000 a year. i went hunting this weekend, covered 1400km + in truck and skidoo and saw over a hundred cows but no bulls. not only that , telling a cow from a bull is nearly impossible, they both have antlers. needless to say i was a little dissapointed to come home with no meat but the three days in the bush was fantastic except the 500+ gut piles that were laying along the ice road. i'm done ranting now.

I was in a meeting several weeks ago in the NWT with ENR and the caribou Outfitters. I beleive that you are dealing with Anti Hunters in the ENR and they are trying to stop caribou hunting!!!!!! They are manipulating the numbers to benefit thier cause in my opinion. And they are attacking only those which they can the non natives. Stand up and fight for your rights!!!!!

(there are suposed to be rules about taking gut piles off the roads so they don't end up in the lakes during the melt... )

Where were you hunting? Up near YK or towards WhaTi?

I think hunting the roads towards WhaTi might be slightly better. Over all less people on them compared to YK area...and I've seen some good sized groups along that road system.

I also saw a couple of caribou near the Buffalo Junction last year:eek: ...pretty plump too. I wonder if they lasted long so 'close' to town:rolleyes:

.

there are not rules about the gut piles, just suggestions but in the 200kms of gut piles i saw one gut pile getting picked apart off the road in the bushes, i was near indin lake, near the road to colomac mine

pretty much, most herds i saw were between 5 and 30 animals and the gut piles were the same. thousands of animals come through there but it still can't be good to take as many as they are taking. there were a ton of wolf tracks but i didn't get my eye on any, i wish i did though. well i'm done with caribou for the season, grayling fishing the end of april then spring bear hunt, can't wait.

Kakisa....Damn you:D ...I miss out this year. Do you use fly, or a spin cast like this heathen.

After Grayling, out to 6 Mile Creek for Jackfish, and in three months Walleye right in town.....ahhhhh fishing

according to ENR between native non native residents and outfitters they are taking less than 5500 caribou annually with outfitters taking less than 1000 mature bulls. This number of animals will not affect the herds increasing or decreasing either way.
