Just got a unfired .357 Dan Wesson made in the early 80s. Was sighting it in with some 38 special target loads. At random the action locks up when I try to pull the hammer back. I have to open the cylinder and close it and then it works fine for a while. Anyone have any suggestions as to what is happening and how to fix it.

Hmmm...

Sounds like the ejector rod is rotating and unscrewing itself as the cylinder rotates, locking up the cylinder.

Check that out :)

Blue loc-tite might solve the problem... hard to say as I've never taken apart a DW Revolver.

Also with DW's tighten the sideplate screws, for some reason they have all kinds of issues if those screws aren't tight, after you tighten them the symptoms magically vanish. Also if there's a shroud, make sure it's not moving on you.

It might need some oil on the internal parts, I have had revolvers that would hang up like that but with a bit of lube they worked fine.

I have been shooting since I was 10 years old...I am now 40...every dan wesson handgun I have ever seen and there has been a few...has been messed up somehow...sell it and get a smith...........
