I'm thinking about buying the Daniel Defense M4 Carbine V7 for my first AR-15. Any suggestions or input would be appreciated. Value for money?
break in period? Types of ammo? I want to put my money into a quality rifle that's why I choose this one.
Thank you

I bought the very thing about a month ago. You will not be disappointed. I chose the Cerakote version. I've only had it put to the range a couple of times, but very good results. I'll update my post in a bit with a pic.

I like that V7...looks sharp wearing FDE.

Can't say much about the V7, as I don't own one. But what I can tell you is that if it is anything like my DD M4V5, you will not be disappointed. Great shooting rifle, very accurate, and very reliable. I don't think that it gets much better than having a Daniel Defense as a first rifle.

Just my 2 cents...

+1 here. Zero hiccups on my rifle to date. Bought it when Wolverine first started bringing them into Canada in 2012. :)

My V7 has been going strong since 2012. must be approaching 6000 rounds now, and no issues to speak of. Replaced the MOE stock with a B5 Bravo as it got a little wiggly with time. Also ditched the A2 grip and trigger with an ALG. I am perfectly happy with it now. Function was always great, but fits is all preference. Paired mine with a Aimpoint micro or a EXPS3.0 depending on the mood.

Daniel Defense makes arguably the best bang for your buck. A lot of people think they need a proven battle rifle (which Daniel Defense is eventually going to become mind you) but the average user takes it out to the range, pounds off a few hundred rounds (maybe), puts in back in it's hard case and calls it a day. Hardly a battle ;) So that rifle will go farther than you'll ever need to go.

As far as ammo (and rifle really when it comes down to it) it depends what you're doing with it really. If you're banging off quick shots for fun and shooting more dirt than steel or paper, buy the cheapest ammo you can find. If you're worried about careful sub-MOA groups, buy match ammo. In that case, try as many different brands as you can because you'll have to find out what your gun likes best. In the rifles I use for target shooting I've always loved Hornady brand almost regardless of calibre.

Break in ... everyone will tell you something different. The honest truth is that there is no repeatable scientific results behind any break in process that I've ever seen, I'm a professional armourer so I've researched it a lot. I like to think of it from more of a metallurgical angle. Don't let it get too hot too fast, and don't keep it hot for too long. You can easily see how the heat over an extended period of time would effect things more than carbon build up. It's hard to judge heat of course, so really just be sensible. If you fire off 800 rounds in a row as fast as you can without stopping you may have issues ... may. Good luck with the amount of mags you'd need haha.

Hope this helps ;)

My DDM4 V5 is an awesome rifle, you definitely can't go wrong with DD. They make a mil-spec, top tier rifle. I wouldn't worry too much about break in, just lube it up a little, take it out and start shooting. It's got a hammer forged and chrome lined barrel. Shoot whatever ammo you like, for basic plinking I like the American Eagle and PMC stuff, Norc ammo is iffy at times I've been having some trouble with it lately.

Thanks for all excellent information guys!!
Any suggestions for folding sights and other optics?

For folding sights... on a budget, there's Magpul MBUS.

If your budget allows $150+, there's ARMS, MidWest Industries, Troy Battlesights, KAC, Yankee Hill etc. They're all pretty solid iron sights.

I have a v7 and love it..... Only issue was with some poorly pinned p-mags that got stuck in the magwell because of the rivet. You can not go wrong with DD.
