hi everyone. I inherited a shotgun a few years ago. I've done some reading on it. I don't know if its safe to fire.
its a bolt action J.C. Higgins model 583.20 sears roebuck and co. its 12ga 2 3/4 chamber.

apparently there was a recall on them because the bolt would brake loose and fly into the shooters face when fired.
I know that's a darn good reason not to fire it.

after more reading.
apparently someone was using it without the bolt stop screw and hit them self in the face while cycling the bolt and that's why sears recalled it.
anyone have experience with this?
its not like I need it as a shotgun just would like to know if i can fire it.
thanks.

Every once in a while a friend or friend of a friend shows up, says "I got this shotgun. You think its safe to fire it". I put on a coat with a heavy sleeve and a thick leather glove. I load a shell, stand on the south side of a tree, place the butt against the north side of the tree and pull the trigger. I give it a visual inspection for signs of unwanted damage, Hand it back to its owner and say "yup".

So, you only get issued with one pair of hands and one pair of eyes. Your choice.
Clearly you know about the recall, and still want to shoot it?
The recall was not based on one failure.
