darkening a stock

I'd like to darken the colour on a but stock to better match the colour of the fore stock. I'm guessing that I need to strip it down, stain and refinish. I'm not really that crazy about going that route as the stock condition is fine with the exception of the colour.
So is there another way?

No other way except solid stain or paint over the existing finish, which will obscure the wood grain. Sorry!

best to use a aniline dye --Lee Valley.

Yup strip it and stain it only way, use an antique wood stripper it is easy on the wood. Probably won't match the front how hard you try might aswell do them both.
