dating a remington 700

k guys, i've tried flowers, chocolates, and long walks on the beach but she still wont give up the info. the story is last week i bought a mint remington 700 from a guy at work and i couldn't be happier with the purchase...now i'm hoping you guys can help me with a little info on 'er. i'm pretty sure its a adl because it has a top loaded internal box magazine and no hinged plate. the barrel stamp is B M meaning january either 1965 or 1992 (this is the part i'm not sure of). has what appears to be a factory remington recoil pad, and iron sights. the receiver is drilled and tapped but i'm not sure if it came from the factory like that, or if a smith did it. another interesting thing is the barrel and receiver has a blued finish but the barrel is clearly stamped stainless steel. the serial number is 134###, but it doesn't seem to help determining the age of the gun. i wasn't looking for another rifle, but because of the price, and the fact its in such great shape LNIB i couldn't pass it up as a back up rifle or just a fun gun. also its chambered in 7mm rem mag and since i don't have one in that calibre it gives me an excuse to go out and buy more re-loading gear. thanks guys
 
Does it have the anti bind grove " bolt guide" in the receiver .this was designed into the 700 in 1973-74 .if there is no bolt guide it would have been produced befor 73-74.

Does the bolt lock with the safety on...if so its a early one..... pre 1982 vintage... after 82 the bolt opens safety on or off....hope this helps sounds like a early one...please put up a pic!!!! and the later ones had a prefix to the serial number....eg...a.......b.......c.......

Its chambered in 300WM and the only markings I can find are stamped DO 57 on the left side of the barrel.Now my question is,is it a 1977 or a 1994?

Yes,my bolt locks when the safety is on--Does that mean its a 1977 model?
What does the 57 mean?

Remington after March of 1982 says the 700s made.... did not have the bolt lock....they also had a recall program to remove the bolt lock....I would say yours is a early model....1977
 
Being chambered for the new at the time(1962) 7mmRemington Magnum, this is what made these rifles sell like hot cakes. Remington couldn't keep up with demand in the early years for this very combination you own.

A funny story was one of my co-workers dad had the exact rifle. Apparently his dad, nor the Smith, were aware of the blued electrolysis carbon over stainless process Remington used, and made a big mess of his finish. Guess the Stainless was for to combat severe throat erosion found in early rifles,from the hot factory loads of the day which were screamers. 175s@ 3070.

Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. For shotguns with removeable barrels, the code will be valid for the manufacture of the barrel; maybe for the receiver, as barrels do get switched around.

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values", the coding continues as follows:

As maybe seen, the year code letters duplicate; some knowledge of when the model was introduced should resolve the actual year of manufacture.
