For a first shotgun for a smaller person there is no better choice tha a 28 gauge.Light weight with a great pattern.A Remington 1100 28 gauge or a Franchi 48 AL 28 gauge are fine choices.Charles Daly also makes a 28 gauge auto loader but I have never used one .
The 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL weights only 5 1/2 pounds and is about as perfect a shotgun as you could get to use in the uplands on rabbits(snowshoe Hare in my area) and partridge (ruffed grouse).Very dependable and a joy to carry on those long days in the field.
