2nd year in a row for my daughter on CGN. Hope it continues.
A bit of a cut and paste from HBC Forum
Went on our usual Sept. 1st long weekend camp/hunt at Johnson lake with the Steeleco....Mr.Dean.....Dutchie clans of HBC. Sat and sunday was rabbit season.....My daughter Morgan (Morganimal on HBC) got her first bunny Sat night and then 4 more that same eve while I bagged 5 myself. Next night we took 3. Had a huge potluck at the campsite and my wife Auto girl made them yummmmmmy as usual......not sure how many the Steelco family bagged.
Here is Morganimal with her first...(nice head shot too)
Monday morning was opening for deer youth season.....up at 4 30am...out of camp at 5 and away we went....
We saw a nice black bear.....we didnt take it because we were watching for cubs......by the time we were sure.....no good shot for my girl.
Then we sat and glassed. We watched a doe and 2 fawns for an hour and they fed to within 47 yrds of us.....Morgan was on the edge of her seat the whole time forgetting how cold she was.
Hunted the rest of the morning but nothing after that......we had to go back to camp and pack for the trip home. Hiked back to the truck.....put our gear away and talked with our friend John who was bow hunting the area. Packed up his bow and he was showing me some of his gear when I hear...."Dad.....its a deer" She was looking right behind me....I turned.....My god what a Monster Mulie....... Broad side about 60yrds away looking at us....It must have been coming up the dirt rd. I whispered to Morgan...."go get your gun"....."John.....DONT MOVE" Morgan loaded her 7mm-08, set up her bog pod for a rest but the deer took 2 steps into the bush....all we saw was its rear quarters and one side of its face and antlers.....5 points....thick...tall....and full velvet......
Morgan didnt shoot. It took another step and vanished into the thick bush. I took morgan and we tried to find it again but no luck. She looked at me and said..."no clear shot dad....you said never shoot if you dont have one"........Damn thats right.....I did teach her that....ok.....you did good kid. lol....I will cry later.
Back to camp....and packed for the trip home....However...Steeleco offered to keep Morgan till Wed and try again.....Morgan wasnt coming home after she saw that brute....I dont blame her.
So my family drove home minus a little 12yr old girl that now dreams of antlers.
I just heard through the grapevine.....(a text from Mrs.Dean) we had good news......that same night Morgan and Steeleco's daughter BOTH got mulies last night. A double header for the girls. I have no details yet but I am sure pics and a full story are coming.....(my turn to tease some members and leave them waiting.....what a nice change)
A special thanks to Steeleco for keeping my little hunter and getting her out.
A special thanks to John for sitting with her while Steeleco was sitting with his girl......
and of course A huge thank you to the both of them working hard cause I am sure they did the grunt work gutting and dragging while listening to both girls giggling and reliving their hunt.
Nicely done gentlemen.....I am incredibly jealous and wish I was there for every second. Damn working for a living. I cant wait for the details and the smile on my little girls face.
The story in the words of a 12yr old girl
Was a long evening. I was soaked. We saw lots of whitetails as well.
Some really big bucks but it didn't work out.
I got this guy last 10mins of light.
98yrds 1st shot took out the lungs. Buck was still standing with head down and doing the moonwalk. John said shoot him again. So I did.....buck dropped like a rock.
bullet was a 110gr Barnes TTSX out of my 7mm 08 reduced recoil loads so the rifle wont kick me too hard
Thank you to John and Steeleco for all their help
we got back to camp late and hung mine and Heathers deer. We changed to dry clothes. Ate supper. Fell asleep.
Next morning slept in then skinned my buck almost by myself with a little help from Steeleco. Dad said next stop region 8 so I can try and get another
Thanks for looking fellow CGNers. I will let Steeleco post up his girls success. Wont steal his thunder.
Good luck this season people
