Today was the first day I could get out on the Antlerless(draw) moose hunt, saw 8 this morning, 4 were bulls including the largest one I've seen in the flesh. I was holding out for a calf, and this evening I saw 2 cows and 1 calf. After a game of hide and seek, I fired on the calf off cross sticks at nearly 200 yds. We were joined by the landowner shortly as he heard the shot from a long way away and thought it an odd sounding shot! So we asked him permission to hunt on his spread, he gave us his blessing and we finished up and were home by 7:00. The calf dropped instantly on a slightly high chest hit, leaving a fist sized exit hole. Being old school I didn't get any pics yet, but I don't know how to send or post them anyways.
I guess the morale to the story is; if this "over the hill", out of shape guy, can do it, anyone can do it! Just get out there!!!

Congrats on the moose. The only thing stopping me from being out there right now is that the deer season doesn't open until Nov. 3 in my zone. I might get out for a couple of day trips for elk in the next couple of weeks if things work out right.

Here the muzzleloading deer season is on at the same time as the moose hunt, so I have/had lots of options. Other then making bullets I am retired so I can get out anytime I want, but it'll have to be a monster buck before I shoot at it, and all I'm seeing are does. I hope you get lots of chances to get out, makes more sense then work anyways.

I have a draw moose tag in the Greenwater area that was open for the first half of October, but the weather was so nice I had to stay home and keep promises to customers for exterior painting. But another two week season starts 01NOV, or I would have made my excuses and gone in October regardless of weather.

I'll be on my own so I sure hope I find a calf, too.

Zone 39, I never believed that I would see so many moose in a couple of hours. It would make some of J. Shockey's moose stories tame!!

Where the setting sun kisses the earth and time stands still, where the eagle and the sparrow share the unclouded skies....I'm in the middle of 39 in Foam Lake.

That is sure a crazy place for moose to be. They must be completely lost. They should be 175 miles further north.
Sure has spoiled our thunder about going into the mysterious, unforgiving deep woods and high mountains to hunt moose. We'll just go to Saskatchewan and hunt geese in the morning and moose in the afternoon.
Don't have to take grub along, we'll just drop into a McDonalds. Oops, last time I was out that way they were still undiscovered by McDonalds!

It's weird, if you go 200 miles north into the "Forest", well north of where you're from Bruce, you would be hard pressed to see a moose, down here they're all over the place. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a cull or something, maybe increase the tags, or something.

Congratz Ben, I came home with a calf this year as well. Never did get the Bull or Cow tag filled though :( 221 yrd shot with the BLR 358 did the trick.
