I wanted to put this link to a blog site regarding this years Dominion of Canada Rifle Associations National Matches. There is some very good information available and would encourage anyone who might consider attending this year to read.
With the new changes to F Class ,it maybe just the thing for you to consider.

I was at Connaught over the Victoria Day weekend and can say without reservations, it is a beautiful, challenging range that every Long Range Canadian shooter should have the opportunity to shoot at least once in their life.
Once visited though, the revisits almost become addictive......
August comes FAST

Ont000001:

You are so right. LR Fans, if you have never been to Connaught, it's the closest to shooting Mecca that you can attain in this lifetime. The groundhogs are funny to laugh at. The food at the mess hall is great. I ain't complaining. TimK and I gain weight there. That's bad news for us, good news for you all.
Get out and support this facility , your PRA's and the DCRA (while we still can ;) )

I told my wife that I wanted to do it once, so I went last year. Now I can't imagine missing it. Gotta build up the brownie points so I can go this year too. You just never know who you'll meet, and what they'll be willing to share. Come on folks- I don't want to be the only guy under 35 on the line!

Well, the whole idea with the new changes to F-Class, is to make it even more attractive. Supporting all three classes (F/Open, F/Restricted and F/Farquharson), going to "5-V" scoring on a ~1MOA 5-ring F-Class target, and squadding F-Class all together on the same relay, are all intended to make it a better match.

Come out and shoot with us, and most importantly, let us know what we are doing right, and what we should fix.

I started shooting TR (iron sights and sling) there in 1993, and was stunned at the high level of shooting you get to rub shoulders with. And how much of it rubs off onto your own shooting, and how quickly. Later I shot F-Class for about five years, and have since returned to TR. Either way, Connaught is a range and the Canadian Championships are a match that you can enjoy from your very first time there, yet it can provide a lifetime of challenge.

You can read more on the blog, but it should be pointed out that you can spend quite a bit less than nine days shooting there if you are constrained by time and/or money. You could just make a "super long weekend" of shooting out of the warmup matches at the beginning, which are Friday, Saturday, plus Sunday morning - by my count, you could fire as many as 130 rounds on score at 300m, 100 rounds at 800m and 900m, and 25 rounds at 500y and 600y, over these first 2.5 days. This could be done in as few as two days off work (Thu & Fri), over four days total.

Or, the majority of the match can be fired with only five work days off. Travel on Saturday, shoot Sunday to Saturday (Grand Agg, Gov. Genl Prize, team matches, etc), return home on Sunday.

I know Ian,the costs sure add up.I'm trying to do it as inexpensive as possible and have booked into the barracks with the meal plan.3 squares and a bunk fo 30$ a day.
Maybe I'll have to cut out short range and only shoot the long range to get me through.

Still ,it sure is not an inexpensive sport I've chosen to participate in.I've seen the matches posted here for yours and those in BC and would truly enjoy coming out, but the reality of costs continue to interfere with my pleasure.
One of the suggestions I had made to the FCAC group was that perhaps we could at the PRA level ,host fund raiser's for supporting those members attending and likewise
the DCRA have fundraiser's to help support those teams going to Bisley or any World Level Match.Would be NICE to get some support or sponsorship.
In the meantime I just have to scrape together what's needed.
As to time involved, that I'm not sure everyone could vacation plan the entire two weeks and would have to time it to shoot just what they could. On the other hand ,to have the opportunity to shoot almost 2 weeks long for those that can on a range like Connaught, is a fantasy vacation.
No easy answers I'm afraid ,but I sure would love to figure out a way that as a sport we could get sponsors and supporters like other teams.
I know I would even volunteer to do a tastefully naked calendar shoot like the Canadian Womens Olympic team .Pretty sure naked old fat guy hiding behind a rifle wouldn't garner much support. The US Teams were able to get rifles to raffle off and I'm sure have other fund raising events.
Since none of this is in place ,I remain as my tag line...
I can only hope to see some representation from ALL of Canada there this year .

Hi Daniel

Could you clarify a couple of points for me, in your response to Keith you say

So to answer your questions, yes, you can enter both the ISSF(fired Fri. AM and Sat. AM) and the Long Range Challenge (fired Fri. PM and Sat. PM). As well as these, you can also enter the Army and Navy Veterans Match (2ss15 900m Sat. PM).

Later on you indicate this

Here is how the 9 days are broken down:

1st Friday morning through Sunday morning - warmup matches

Am I to understand that for F class the long range match is the first weekend Aug 14-16 and for TR shooters that 1st weekend is a warmup to allow everyone to arrive?

Thanks
Trevor

Hi Daniel

Could you clarify a couple of points for me,

Hi Trevor,

The schedule for TR shooters is the same as the schedule for F Class shooters. Almost without exception, every match has both TR and F Class entries.

The first 2.5 days are "warmups", which means shooting of various sorts, that is not in the Grand Aggregate (the Grand runs from noon Sunday to Friday morning). There are sighting/zeroing opportunities, there are matches such as the Army and Navy Veterans Match (2 sighters and 15 score at 900m; and the match is named _after_ A&N vets, it's not reserved for only A&N vets), the Ottawa Regiment (2ss15 at 800m). These matches have winners of them (for both TR and F-Class), and they are also included in some of the various aggregates (there's darn near an agg for any combination you can imagine!).

There are also "bigger" matches during the warmups. For example, the Long Range Challenge is 2ss15 @ 900m fired four times (so a total of 60rds on score at 900m), and also the Sierra Canadian 300m ISSF Championship (120 rds on score at 300m). Nobody has to shoot any of these matches, they are all "extras" that you can pick and choose from; shoot as little, or as many, as you want/need, to get yourself warmed up, practiced up, familiar with the range etc, so you can roll in the Grand Agg on Sunday afternoon at the peak of your stride.

Let me know if this answers what you were interested in, or if there's more you'd like to know...

Good shooting,
