Hey all, I've been wondering about this for a while (and how it relates to the alberta hunting regs specifically):

If a guy is drags his kill back to camp and knows how to bone and butcher it right then and there, and then happens to proceed to bone and butcher it in camp so that all he has left is a cooler full of meat and a gutpile and ribcage and pile of bones at his feet, what exactly are the legalities of that?

How does a guy leave "evidence of ### attatched" or the "skull plate with antlers" etc etc when he is packing out only meat? I can't quite figure this one out... Cheers -Cameron

There is nothing difficult to figure out. You cannot remove the evidence of ### (testicles, scrotum or udder) from that part to which the tag is affixed. In other words, you'll have to at least wait till you get home to fully butcher that hind quarter. I pack out on horses and at least leave the leg bone in to give the quarter some substance that makes it easier to pack it out with. Don't forget that with deer, you also have to leave the tail attached. Bottom line is, you can do most of your butchering, but you will have to keep one hind intact, you can partially skin it though.

Can't do it until you get home or to the butcher shop. You are destroying evidence of ### by boning it out. Udder, #### and tail must be left on. There is a place in the reg hat explains it. Have to admit tho, that there are lots of things in the regs that are vague.

OOOH I see. You sir, are god damn brilliant. Thank you very much for your reply. That saves me from a whole bunch of confusion and a legal #### storm. Cheers -Cameron

While hunting in BC i ran across this problem, we had the officers stop by our camp and check on the deer. He told me to go ahead and de bone the animal, except for the 1 quater which had the evidence of species and ###. Leave that one whole until I get to the butcher. He gave me his card and told him to call him if I had any problems with another officer.

What I do in alberta is the same thing, except make sure that the evidence is on the same leg as the tag.

I remove a section of the hide, tail, evidence of ### and skin it back towards the hoof, I then take a shoping bag (or garbagebg) stuff all of the above into it and tie it off with some twine. I then put the quater into a game bag and leave the shoping bag full of goodies outside the game bag. So far no issues, the hair stays off the meat, the meat gets cooled and I meet all of the legal requirements. ( i Think). Well I havent gotten into trouble yet.

in ontario there's no problem with deer except antlered or anterless. if transporting a quarter only, the transporter has to have name, address and lisence number of hunter who tagged it. same with black bear. with moose you have to leave proof of ### until done transporting. you can debone but you have to carry with you the "### organs" as it's stated in the regs.
