Now I don't know if this should be posted here or in the legalese forum. I'm in the middle of restoring a 1903 Springfield (RIA). I was looking at Deactivated Firearms to canibalize them for parts as they are sometimes pretty cheap. Is this legal? (like are they registered or not). Has anyone done this before? If I bought one from the states can it just 'Jump the boarder'?

Any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

To reactivate a non-restricted should not be a problem, best to check with the CFC guys first. A restricted is also possibly doable, but again one would have to check with the CFC guys. When it comes to prohibs, aside from the movie guys, museums or government, it likely can't be done unless the gun was still registered as a prohib.

Importing a deact became a lot harder when customs decided that deacts will be treated as live guns during import and then must be certified by a gunsmith as deactivated once imported. That would mean they would have to be registered on import.

You can take anything off a dewat you want except the receiver. You can't import them however as posted above unless they are antique status.
