Deactivating Smith safeties?

A while back Smith & Wesson introduced those awful safeties that require a key to unlock the hammer.

I'm wondering - is it possible to get the safety deactivated or removed, preferrably permanently, so it has no chance of locking up the gun when I need it the most? Could I do this myself or will I need to take it to a gunsmith?

- Dave.

Yeah, a revolver. Somehow I don't like Smith & Wesson's new M&P pistol.

I just heard rumours that these safeties could suddenly engage if the gun was dropped or banged about. I hope they're unfounded, although I lost a lot of respect for Smith & Wesson when they, America's biggest gunmaker, got swayed by a bunch of gun-hating weenies.

have you fired the MP? Its a good gun, points well, might make a good cheap starter for you. Plus with interchangeable backstraps you can change your grip until it fits.

I've been all over the various S&W forums, haven't heard of this actually happening to anyone. just rumor that it could, but hasn't. Kind of like the sky falling.
I like the one on my M&P, no trigger lock needed when transporting.

I don't mind the unit myself. It's out of the way, almost invisible and secure. It's easy to use, and WON'T turn itself on. On the other hand I have had a combination trigger lock fail and had to cut it off. If you don't like it don't use it. It has no effect on the trigger pull. Would I pay another 10$ to get a smith without it? Probably, but with our stupid laws it's a easy way to secure the gun.
