Hey Guys,

I am debating on a new rifle for large game. Trying to decide what caliber to go with, I am tossing around the idea of 7mm Rem Mag, 300 wsm or possibly a 270 wsm. I recently bought an X Bolt and love it so now I want another. Currently looking at the Browning X Bolt Long Rang Hunter, they are a reasonable weight which I like and have the muzzle brake. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Scott

Its what you feel comfortable with. All three will do for all your hunting needs.
The 7 Rem Mag would be the easiest to find cartridges for most likely if you find that you forgot to bring ammo and you are well away from home!

30-06 is also very easy to find and will handle your needs. I would just do price matching and go with better value since they will all work fine. I have not looked in to reloading 7mm, 300wsm or 270wsm but I know that the 30-06 has alot of options to play with

Go for a standard length/normal shouldered cartridge rather than the shortfats. I've used my share of both and the short mags just don't feed as smoothly. Unless you're 5'2 and need a shorter action. I wouldn't worry about the ballistic side of it too much, any of the cartridges you listed and most other legal rounds will do the job.

I have a Browning Safari Mauser, Remington 700, and Savage LRPV. The Savage is the highest quality and most accurate gun by far. I would suggest looking at the Savage 11/111 Long Range Hunter in 6.5 x 284 Norma. Just check to be sure the action and magazine will cycle the long seated bullet this caliber will need. Lapua makes high quality brass for this cartridge so you are good to go.

If you stick with the .270Win,it can be used in all of southern Ontario for varmint/predator. It can also be loaded with heavy bullets for Deer and Moose. In a Browning X-bolt,it would be simply awesome.

Keep in mind that 7MM (.284) is too big to use as a varmint caliber in southern Ontario.

6.5 mm .257" (25-06)
6.7 mm .264" (6.5x55 SE, 260 Rem, 6.5 Creedmore)
7.0 mm .277" (270 Win, 6.8 SPC)
7.2 mm .284" (7X57 Mauser, 270 WSM, 7mm-08, 7mm Rem Mag, 280 Rem)

... so you're fine with 270 Win. Personally, I prefer 6.5x55 :)

Ontario's FWCA specifies less than .275 for small game. A .270win is just under that while 7MM is just over. Use of a 7MM will result in a charge. CO's go by what's on the ammo's head stamp and has been upheld by the Crown and Courts.
