I've heard nothing but good reports about german mausers. I was contact by one guy who has a mosin for sale.As said above, the Mauser is 8mm (7.92x57) ammunition is at least 50% more expensive, although shoots very nice , is not 7.62x54R.
I hunted with my Mosin 91/30 most of last fall and its a nice rifle with a good hunting bullet. Lots of rounds available without hand loading and there is still some surplus on the market for cheap shooting.
Westrifle and Frontier have good deals on an assortment of Mosins as well as some package deals with ammo.

Which is also on my to buy list. They both proved themselves in war.
Mosin in WW2 and Nam and the mauser in WW2
Having that said, ammo seems to be at both a low in availability and a premium to buy. I'm solving this with a set of loading dies when I've accumulated enough brass.
You can't go wrong with a Mosin Nagant. You've got two options the M44 or the 91/30, and they're about half the price of that Mauser.

I have 38 pieces of 8mm mauser brass you can have for the cost of shipping if you want it.
As for the OP's question. I can't say anything bad about my SVT-40. The brass is reloadable after being run through it, and where else are you going to find a full power semi auto for $300?
I bought my first and last Mosin sometime back in 1984 for $25.00.
shot great, no idea on the model.
if I'd have known how they have gotten expensive, I would have bought 100 of them.
I still know where my old one is... perhaps I will get it back one day
they kick like a mule, but are powerful enough for any game in north america
