I'm looking to buy a decent spotting scope and rangefinder. I am just starting into long range shooting so would be using the spotting scope for that plus use with my milsurps. I'd like a rangefinder I can use on coyote hunts and for target shooting.

Farthest I see myself shooting in the next few years is 1000m and I'm on a fairly tight budget with a young family.

Thanks!

If you have a yound family and are on a tight budget, spend a little more on glass because you only want to buy once. Look at Kowa, Pentex and Nikon.

I definitely don't want to cheap out but at the same time I can't break the bank right now. The rangefinder will be down the road a bit but I need a spotting scope in the next month. I'm thinking my max I can afford right now to be about $500.

Please note that if the goal is to use a spotting scope to see hits on target after they have arrived, save your money.

There is NOTHING on the planet that can see bullets holes in paper past 300yds when the mirage comes up.

If someone is helping you watch your trace and impacts, by all means. Here the KOWA and Pentax are great values. A good pair of binos work for this too.

But if you are shooting alone, I would put the money into a better scope. here the Sightrons are an amazing value for optics, tracking and features. You can spot as well as most spotters that cost more and better then any spotter that costs less.

If shooting alone at LR or if you want to track hits on target, best investment is a wireless TX/RX, digi cam, LCD monitor and watch the show as if you were 10ft away. Cost WAY less then most quality spotters and if you set up properly, work better then ANY spotter at LR.

for a rangefinder, if going beyond 600yds in the sun on light coloured ground, Leica or Swarovski.

Thanks again Jerry, point taken. I wound up buying a cheapo, but hopefully it will be good enough for some abuse coyote hunting and for sighting in at the Ross rifle shoot in Calgary next month. My wife will be there so I'm sure she can spot for me. I can't see bullet holes at 100 with irons or my 3.5x '40s milsurp 'scopes so this was my main concern.

I'll continue saving for that Sightron! (and a lefty .223, thats the deal, I get a 'scope, she gets a rifle and my old 'scope. Lol).
