Well I managed to get a bullet bloody this weekend I headed back to Grande Cache on Thursday night, fighting with the snow from about Wildwood to right around the Hwy 40 turnoff. Hwy 16 wasn't too bad traction/slippery wise, but it was snowing so damn hard, it was blinding me in the headlights. Down to 50-60 KM/hr quite a few times on 16 due to no visibility. What should have been about a 5 hour trip turned into 7 hours.

Pretty much as soon as I got here Thursday night, I hit the sack. 6 in the Morning was coming way too quickly. Alarm clock goes off, get up, dressed, etc.

Going to the gas station in the Morning to top the tank up, I got passed by a RCMP vehicle, lights going, and he turned down the Hwy in the direction I wanted to go.

Found out later that there was a pretty good crash (No idea if fatalities were involved or not.) We got a skiff of snow Thurs night, and with the salt residue on the road, from previous in the day, it partially melted, and froze smooth. I didn't have any troubles, but I wasn't trying to break any records speed wise either.

Hunting partner and I decided to head to the same area I got my Mule Deer in last year. We checked out some of the usual good spots, but weren't seeing a thing.

With it being a year since we had both been in there, we decided to drive around and see if anything had changed.

Last year I was in there with my car, and this other road that took off from the main road was awful iffy looking for a car to try, but now that I have a decent 4wd vehicle, we went for it.

Just got started down that road, and saw an old approach leading into a cut block. We nosed in it, and had a look-see. Nice looking cut block and we were making mental notes to come back and have a sit down session in there after we checked out some more areas.

That's when I looked to my left, and 2 deer there..... 1 with antlers, and a doe No hesitating with this one like I did with that little Mulie at thanksgiving this year. Crunch time is now, and anything legal was acceptable.

HE was standing still quartering away quite sharply, he was about the midpoint between quartering away, and facing directly away. I hummed and hawed for a sec, and being that he was only 86 yds (verified later with a range finder) I gave him one in the neck. rather than try to punch through a lot of nasty stuff to try and hit the boiler room.

Boom, Down!!! Whitetail taken care of. My hunting partner had already got his Whitetail buck, and had the supplemental tag left. as soon as I shot, he said, I'm taking the doe!

He just got loaded, and the doe started trotting off.She would stop and look at us while behind a tree, a couple of times and never offered my partner a good shot.

Weird thing is that instead of her taking the 30 yards direct line back to the bush, she made a big semi circle in the block and finally my partner had a crack at her. I tagged my buck, and headed over to where he was. Sure enough, he got her. I wish she would have stayed where the buck was as we had a fairly easy drag back through mostly grass. The doe on the other hand, we were dragging her through the stumps and sticks and down where they had reclaimed the road.

Pictures were taken, but not developed yet. I forgot my Camera in Red Deer, so I'm waiting on Craig to use up the roll of film he has in his camera before I'll be able to post anything picture wise. HE was a 4X4 whitetail, ( I don't count the brow tines so if you do, he was a 5X5) somewhere around 130 points. Heavy bases on him as well.

Pics to follow sometime.....

Congrats on the 2 deer!!! I drove the upper section of Highway 40 from Nordegg to Hinton later Thursday night (turned onto Highway 40 at Nordegg at midnight) on my way to Jasper/Hinton to hunt Friday/Saturday/Monday and battled 18" snow the entire drive!!! I was very glad to have a 4x4 and good tires. I had to stop twice to clear the space between my 2002 Dodge Ram's grill and radiators of snow and it was constantly blowing up over my hood onto the windshield!!! FUN TIMES.

I know, I'm waiting for them too. Trouble is, I think there were still about 20 pics left to be taken on that roll of film. Hopefully, he practices some photography here right quick snd uses up the rest of the film.

I'm hoping to have some pics by the end of the season hopefully not much more than 2 weeks or so from now.
