Dedicated 22lr AR, do you even need to plug the gas port?

With a bunch of spares I have I am putting up a dedicated 22lr and I do not have either spare gas block nor tube

can I just keep the gas hole open under a FF tube? I really don't see how it could be a problem, but I have been wrong many times in the past......

I will be using the basic cmmg conversion with a regular AR barrel

That hole is going to be venting nasty high pressure flame after the bullet goes past it. I'd be blocking that hole with something solid for sure.

22lr: 24 000 psi
223: 55 000 psi

Not sure if it will be that bad... can't be worst than ported pistols? (I understand the gast port is pretty small, hence the question)

Only problem is the gas port is half way down the barrel, so the gas port will be venting for a much longer time than a ported pistol barrel. Also, if you're going to go make a dedicated upper, why not have a barrel with a more appropriate 1 in 14" or 1 in 16" twist made.
