Just got a wicked deal on a model 88. Problem though the guy I bought it off inheirited it from his father who engraved his sin# on the barrel and receiver.
It is probably as deep as the factory serial number.
What would be the best method of filling in the engraving that would still allow me to re-blue it (most likely cold blue)

I'm no Smith but Cold Blue often looks like hell and is not very Durable anyways. Good for Small touchups etc.
I'd take it to a Smith and have it Reblued......chances are the engravings can be polished out...if not maybe filled with german sodder or ???

At any rate here's a BTT to maybe generate a rely from the more Knowledgeable Fellas on here;)

Best of Luck:)

I have found that the only way to remove etchings in metal is to remove the metal around them. Any type of fill will show through new blueing. I use a very fine stone for carbide and slowly rub it over the scratch/etch until I get it down enough to be near invisible. Cold blueing is not recommended since the work area is too big. You will see it through the blueing.
