Howdy fellow CGN'ers.

A close friend and I are currently in Portage La Prairie, MB. We were wondering where some good places to hunt deer and grouse were. We have already been checking out the Portage Sandhills WMA, but we were looking to go somewhere north next weekend. Any suggestions are welcome. Ex, try north of (insert town here).

Also, any tips for first time deer hunters are welcome. I'm soaking in as much information as I can through Google, but you guys always seem to have information that other sources don't. If someone could clarify the use of scents and possibly calls, that would be much help.

We've also come across an abandoned bus (looks like it's from 1960's) that's on the edge of a nice clearing. We're looking to use it as a blind. Is there any do's/don'ts when it comes to blinds? Most of the windows are covered, but two (conveniently facing the clearing) aren't. Do we need to cover the remaining windows, or just sitting away from the window is enough?

Thanks for all the help in advance! I've been reading all of the 'first deer' stories here, and am hoping to be able to post one this season as well (with tons of pictures of course!)

Keep on kicking ass guys!:)

There are a few community pastures to the north of you up around Hwy 227 & 430.I think it is the portage community pasture Ph # 243-2681 7 miles north of poplar point,There is also the westbourne/lakeview Comm. pasture Ph.# 386-2143,2 miles west of Langruth and woodland Comm. pasture Ph.# 243-2103 Also 7 miles north of poplar point.Any of these should suit your needs for deer or birds. Most times a simple phone call will get you permission others may want you to sign in.
As for hunting...As this area will be new to you and you will be scouting/hunting at the same time. For morning find a decent cutline whether along a fenceline along a trail till you get some daylight slowly make you way stopping every 15-20 steps keep record of any sign, trails, deer you may actually see and always check you backtrail as deer will hole up until you have passed a ways and then decide to cross the cutline.Get to know the area you are hunting and if it is or appears to be a productive area.
As far as some regs. synthetic deer scents may be used, grunt tubes bleat calls, rattling bags/horns may be used (electronic callers may not be used).

As far as the bus...ensure it is not on private land, ensure it does not run as it is illegal to shot off of,out of a motorized vehicle.

Any other questions feel free to P.M. me.Also A couple other MB. hunting forums worth checking out are www.manitobahunters.com & www.manitobasportsmen.

Good Luck......and take a gps.with you!
