I read the post about hunting deer with an sks and found it to be less than a good hunt to say the least.
I gave Chopperhead a tough time awhile back about not knowing his firearms, but at least he got his deer with a good old 303 and recovered it.

all that story needed was a full auto. must bring bulk boxes of ammo for blazing. its time he took an ethics course and reread the hunting regs if he even read them the first time.

STOP HUNTING WITH THE SKS, for gods' sake! Please please please plunk down the Big Dollahs for a Stevens 200 in a proven big game chambering, and drop an extra $100 on a cheap scope and mount, and STOP blazing away with these pieces of crap. Deer are beautiful, majestic, delicious animals. They deserve to be shown more respect than rapid fire from a POS assault rifle made from stamped pot metal.

And come on now, the 7.62x39 is a marginal cartridge even for the bush, but taking it to clearcuts up in the mountains where long shots are possible or even common... it's worse than stupid, it's unethical and cruel.

So instead of just being pissed off, I'm going to put my rifles where my mouth is. If you, or someone you know, is considering hunting with an SKS this season, I will lend you a hunting rifle to use in its place (while supplies last). Please contact me by IM and we can work out the details. I'll mail it out to you on my dime, as long as you mail it back when you're done with it. Finely-tuned handloads and a properly mounted scope are part of the package. Note that this offer is only available to hunters who intend to hunt with an SKS and who do not already own a big-game rifle.

Because... friends don't let friends hunt with ####ty chicom surplus...

republic i agree in the hands of a skilled hunter and armed with knowledge on what shots to take its do able. in the hands of an idiot its more criminal. blazing away hoping that you can hit the animal isn't hunting. what ever happened to placing one good shot and maybe on rare ocasions a follow up. i for one would want a more accurate rifle than an sk.

For the kind of scenario described in that other post I agree. Firing 3 shots and wounding an animal tells me the hunter taking shots he has no right taking in the first place.
Regardless of the firearm used.

 :runaway: Oh come on, another round! Okay, I admit that I'm an idiot and not a good shooter compared with some of you guys as you have never missed one damn shot and never lost one damn thing in your life.

The issue isn't that you may have missed - that happens - the issue is that you had a wounded deer that you decided not to follow up because you were tired from climbing a little hill.

I lost a deer last year. Bad shot. But I tracked it for an hour until dark, then an hour by headlamp, then drove back the next morning and spent the next five hours looking for it until I found where the coyotes had taken it down.

Wounding deer happens, but when it happens it's our responsibility as hunters to do everything in our power to find that deer and end its suffering.

You apparently didn't even spend more than half an hour tracking the deer. If you're not in good enough shape to get up a hill after a wounded deer, you shouldn't be hunting. Period.

And don't even get me started on how you just popped the legs off because of the meat damage. So the neck was all messed up too? Wow, those SKSs sure are something.

Oh come on! I said that was steep, the hill was damn steep. It's not that I didn't want to climb to the top, I just couldn't make it. Nobody said hunters are supposed to be mountain climbers. I made over 200m up straight at least before I gave up. Or are you suggesting that I rent a heli to land on top of the hill?

And yet, I don't know if the deer was hit. No blood, nothing. And I thought I saw him crouching, but it was just "I thought".

I don't know the neck is edible. Oh man, never tried it.

I can climb anything a deer can climb.

And "I thought" isn't good enough when there's the possibility of a wounded deer.

And what the hell did you think the neck was made of? Wood?

Jesus.

You getta be kidding me! You can climb anything a blacktail can climb? Is this what you're trying to tell me? I thought that kinda hill was only to be handled by goats. :D okay I'll try the neck next time. I thought I ate everything, I was wrong again.

sks and deer

The antis have more fuel to base their nonsense on after reading how Canadians pitlamp deer with a marginal round and then leave half the game in the woods.
Rollingrock, it's time to make your departure from the site and from hunting anywhere. Nobody is going to buy anything from you again...............

You'll be disappointed.

Rollingrock, For the love of god just try this:

" You know on reflecting on the storey I told here I guess it sounds pretty bad, I guess I made some wrong decisions, next time I go hunting I will:

Not shoot with out a rest. Deer are not phantoms I'll get a second chance if iam cool about it

I wont shoot with in 400yds of any terrrain I can not negotiate.

I will stay on my stand till end of shooting light, then I'll case my rifle put away the bullets and go have a scotch.

I am new to hunting and I have a bit to learn, thanks for calling me on my actions and thanks for trying to help guys"

Sincerly and humbley

A bad hunter will screw up a shot with ANY type of firearm.

Clearly this is an operator issue not a rifle or cartridge issue, stop sounding like a bunch of whining closet Liberals with all your blaming the Gun talk.
Esp' you folks from Alberta...you should know better.

And next person to say 7.62x39 is a marginal cartridge might consider getting some books on ballistics, or learn how to shoot.

As I bet they have no problems going out Deer hunting with a .410 slug, or a .45 Colt in an old lever action...both of which are far below the 7.62x39 in power and performance.

Stop blaiming the rifle!
