Deer (and Turkey) Plot Advice

Thanks the nearest PA to me is a 1hr drive

Princess Auto in Stoney Creek has them for $499.00, now you just have to wait for a sale. IIRC it was only advertised locally.

If you really want one I'd be phoneing once a week to see if they are on sale.

They are not the best when it comes to hard pack. With a little extra wait on them the do ok

found a plot mule I can use for $50 for 3days Friday-Monday morning Steve from back yard wildlife is going to bring it over for me.

Good deal, that's a better until(more than twice as heavy). I would still recommend spraying herbicide atleast 2 weeks before. From what I hear many of the OFAH locals have plot equipment that you can borrow free of charge if your a member.

My hunting partner is dead set against using roundup he thinks it will kill what ever grows and wont do anything to deter the weeds and grass from coming back.

If you can give me some ammo to go back at him with re:roundup being ok that would be great as I do not know so much about this stuff yet.

You'll have to decide what herbicide will work best for you, roundup or whatever. In my experience after years of planting small areas surrounded by bush and grasses if you don't spray your asking for failure and I'm sure your Steve will back me up on that

"Round-Up", is a contact herbicide. It will kill everything that is there now. It is non residual. Google "glyphosate", that the active ingredient.
With various plants in the flowering stage right now...if the seeds mature before you spray/ disc your plot, those seeds will regrow.
There are selective herbicide's available to farmers/commercial guys that will kill specific types of plants and leave what you want-clovers.
But they are some nasty/ stinky/ unhealthy(if not applied prop.) stuff.

I'd spray it ASAP. :) If your see a farmer spraying beans, stop and ask if its round up, and you might get it free.

where can I get round up in large jugs? CT is like $39 for 5L whats the coverage like? kinda need to do 1-2 acres??...

You should be able to get large quantities from farm co-ops. Although I do not recall if you need a licenses to buy the agricultural stuff.

I bought the super duper concentrate from TSC It was the stuff that's rain proof in two hours.

IIRC you can even spray just before planting.

Ask at a co-op if they will sell part of a jug (you will need 2L/acre of product). Haven't priced it lately but it was $10/L for RU.
And you are going to need a good water source for tank mix.

They may even have a back-pack sprayer available for rent (RU only)..sounds like it would be perfect for the size of plots you described.

Like I said before RU is Non-residual...there is nothing left in the soil to stifle the regrowth of anything from seed.
