This is off a local Thunder Bay fishing site where you can post questions and a local MNR CO answers them.

Is it legal to put out salt licks for Deer and Moose and also Deer feed while hunting?

MNR Answer:

Yes it is legal to put out salt licks (or other bait) for deer, moose and bear for the purpose of hunting.

The only restrictions for the use of bait in hunting come under the Migratory Birds Convention Act Regulations.

I asked a BC CO the same question about deer baiting. His answer was that it is legal becuase it doesn't work.

Contacted the office in Victoria, as I wanted to 'move' some apples from a nearby apple tree, a little closer to my archery treestand. It is legal in B.C.:DHow well it works I'm not sure but after placing apples in that one spot on a fairly regular basis, I did have have Does come in to them a number of times.

Baiting can work wonders for bringing deer to a specific area. I have the trail cam pics to prove it.

It is illegal to hunt over bait for turkeys, something the MNR failed to mention in their response.

Deer baiting does work, however, deer coming to bait stations tend to do so, in the very late evening, or at night. That makes hunting them a tad illegal.

Yes they do tend to come very late or at night but we hunt approx 1000acres of which 600 is comprised of old farms with orchards. Once all the apples are gone we slowly put out a couple crates of apples, not so much for bait shooting but more in the line of keeping the deer in the area after the natural apples are done.

My buddy works for a winery, and they just love the left overs from pressing grapes!!!!

I put out two homemade deer feeders this year. I think I should rename them more appropriately "Turkey Feeders"

The only two things they informed me that I could not bait for in B.C. are Black Bears and migratory birds.

True, and even with birds you can 'bait' them in an area if you stop baiting 7 days or more before you hunt.

In bc tho there's a slight 'conflict' in the rules. You can bait any animal besides bear and migratory birds, but you cannot 'feed' dangerous animals such as wolves and yotes. So - if you're going to bait for predators, you must either ensure your bait cannot be eaten or take it with you when you go. (note - they don't seem to consider a gut pile or road kill 'bait', as it's sort of part of nature. )

Trail cam pics of deer 5 yards in front of my stand couple weeks ago.

Never thought of it 'till now, but does the no baiting apply just to Black Bears, or is it any & all bears?
Also, if you 'hunted' for a Black Bear close to a gut pile or in close proximity to a road killed Deer, could that be classified as baiting?
I'm not trying to split hairs and I have no real intention of hunting for Bears, but as I said, it just came to mind.
