I was asked yesterday about the legalitys of baiting deer, & I must admit I know nothing of the legalitys of it

Is it legal in Ont to bait deer with apples for bow hunters?? Gun hunters??

I know there's a place close by that sells crates of apples for just that purpose!

Its been a situation of us and them for a long time. Here in N.S. its legal, but they don't come out and say it. My view , if it works for you go ahead.
I see it as a better chance to take a clean shot, and take a deer without having to go to them. So it takes away aloth of the fun , the chase.
My view of why I stay away from it is that, I don't get to see the wonderful landscape , wildlife in other areas, and the rest of it that goes along with hunting, scrapes, rubs, feeding to bedding trails and such.
It changes the patterns of the deer, don't know how many bait piles I found tracking movement of deer. Which messes things up for a still hunter or stand hunter that had it figured out, and then a bait pile goes in a mile down the road, where did all the deer go:eek: LOL
Not aloth differant than hunting a crop field , just on a smaller scale.
For a person that can not get around because of injury or age its a great hunting method.

This is from the MNR in a CWD report.

2.4 Use/Possession of Natural Attractants, Feeding/Baiting
In Ontario, hunters make or purchase natural attractants to use while hunting in the belief
that harvest success will be enhanced. Many of these products are made from deer and
elk animal parts or body fluids, including urine-based lures. Since knowledge of the
mode of CWD transmission is currently incomplete, there may be risks associated with
the use of such attractants if they have been made from infected animals.
In Ontario, the feeding and baiting of free-ranging deer are legal activities used for
hunting, viewing and management purposes. In other jurisdictions where CWD is
present, such activities that promote increased deer densities have been discouraged or
halted as a prevention or control measure. In Ontario, supplementary feeding of deer is
not encouraged by MNR. In areas of the province where winter severity (including snow

To answer you question directly, yes it is legal to bait deer in Ontario. You only get good success if the bait is there year after year (like in a apple orcahrd). I put out apple on my property and the raccoons get them first. The deer much prefer the acorns and will return year after year to gourge on the acorn. Buying crates of apple, you are feeding other animals as well (bear, raccoon, skunk, squirrel). Money not well spent

If you're planning on purposely baiting the wildlife, you might as well drug them like that video in this section about the deer farms for the rich!

!
Now thats just nasty:rolleyes:
There are places where this practice is ethical , kids, old folks, crippled folks, gotta have an open mind to certain applications. After all if you realy look at hunting closely, hunting natural or man made food sources are common place , and a common hunting method. Granted they are not as controled or obvious but similar.

Thats Bull####!

I use an apple pile every year in the same spot about 50 yds from my stand.
In fact, last year I had a button buck come in to it every night all week long and I had an antlerless in my back pocket, did I shoot it? Hell no.

Just because I like to get an animal in alot closer to make sure of that quick, clean kill doesn't even come close to putting me into a canned hunt category. Me and all the guys in my camp are honest law abiding hunters and they wouldn't even be in my camp if they weren't.

Do you actually hunt or just like to make idiotic statements?

Don't worry about answering the last question, I found my answer.

i've never shot an animal, let alone a deer with a compound bow, but to me, as a rifle shooter, that looks like a gut shot.
but then again, iam no expert!

Again someone didn't take the time to think before opening thier Big mouth!!!

I bait every year, it's a large part of my hunt... I sometimes start baiting as early as august. I usually bait with 50lbs bags of corn, apples, carrots, ect. Even Though it's almost a 2hr drive and a 20-30 min hike once I get off the quad, I'll go up every weekend, and get to spend some good quality time outdoors and get plenty of exercise too. I like to see the activity at my spots, (ie tracks, Rubs and scrapes). It's alot a hard work and nothing like a canned hunt.

i didn't mean to be mean, or to criticize
and yes i do hunt, sometimes successfuuly and sometimes not
do the wildlife become dependant on the bait is what i mean
if a bambi knows of this bait pile from youth, what will happen to it if the bait pile stops
or is a bait just a temporary incentive of sorts
do baiters feed the wildlife yearround is what i'm asking?

that comment was regarding a compound bow, way to take it out of context!
i have been hunting for 5 years now, and i haven't slaughtered herds, but i still fill my freezer

Sounds like from a PETA meeting to me,
short answer no they do not.!
But they do prefer a mild winter, and would like as much forage as they can get during those harsh winters. Thats where we come in as hunters, to try and balance the numbers and prevent starvation.
This does not always work, and deer do present a danger to themselves and humans when they wander out on the roads and highways.

Levi,
thanks for informing me, the only thing that reaaly concerned me was the dependancy issue, and you cleared that up.

sorry to the others for jumping on you like that, before i was informed with the truth, and not my misconceptions.
we as hunters need to stick together

Speaking of deer baiting, Anyone using automatic feeders? Was thinkg about making 2-3 of them this spring. I know Moultrie feeders are pretty popular, but haven't found a place where they sell them in my parts.... The only economical feeders I have found around here are the R-kit from AMERICAN HUNTERS OUTDOOR PRODUCTS, anybody have any experience with these?

Thats basically the same principle as the one I use. I just fitted the spinner with an aluminum garbage can that I spray painted with a grey/ black camo pattern. It'll spit the corn out at about a 10' radius depending on how high you have it in the air. The problem I found in October/November is that the 6 volt battery dies quick when sitting in the cold weather like that but once it warms up it'll give you a heart attack when it goes off and your sitting in your stand all nice and quiet.

I don't hunt over bait myself, but I do feed deer in the winter when browse is hard to find, and I make deer "highways" with the snowmobile when the snow gets deep. I love to watch deer as much or more, than I like to shoot them. I can still remember way back when I started hunting, if you even saw fresh deer tracks you were totally excited. I am unsure about the baiting in Ont. I guess Maddog would know for sure. I think salt licks are illegal though.
