Hi guys looking to bye a new deer / coyote rifle .looked at a Rem 700 sps youth in 243 .shorter length of pull ,20 inch barrel .think this would be a fast handling rifle.any input would be appecated.

I find that for a rifle to point quick, you don't necessary want a shorter length of pull, but the right length of pull. Now since I've already opened my mouth, I'll tell you of my experience with a 243 with a 20 inch barrel.
Mine was a Rem 700ADL that I had the barrel cut down to 20 inches, and had a Bell and Carlson fiberglass stock installed on (much the same idea as you). The velocities where a little disappointing with the lighter bullets, and one day, I saw a coyote running across a clear cut on the snow. The shot was about 300 yards, but I figured "what the heck!" and let fly. After the shot, realizing that I'd missed by a mile, and I wasn't going to get another, I put the rifle back on my shoulder and started walking. It occurred to me that It was a lot quieter than It really should be, even my footsteps where muffled. After five minutes, my hearing came back completely, but I swore that day that if I was to have a short barreled rifle, it would be in a bit more sedate of a cartridge.

well, I don't know the law in NS, but here in NB, we can only use .223 or smaller for varmint. In that case I'd go 22-250, more than capable of doing both jobs. But if there are no limits to caliber, I'd go .308 or something similar.

I would say that the 243 is a good dual purpose cartridge, though, as I stated earlier, I would probably want a longer barrel on it for shooting the lighter bullets (see my previous post). Something like a Remington Mountain rifle in 243...............24 inches though.

Whats that Mike, I can't hear ya!! Longer barrels definatly on a hunting rig in most cases. One of my 223's has a 16" tube and I always wear muffs shooting that.

It's either the guns that I've shot without protection, or the heavy metal music, but I definitely don't hear t6hings like I used to any more.

I have grown to respect the 243 over the past 3 years, a cartridge I once swore I would never own.

Its a fantastic accurate, low recoil high velocity round that can launch 60 grain varmint bullets or 100 grain hunting bullets for any deer sized game at good range.

Very deverse, in what it can do, and seems to handle quite a range and assortment of projectiles with forgivng accuracy.

take a look at the stevens rifles made by savage!! i shot a friends 243 this weekend and man its shoots really good groups!comes with a 22inch barrel and is a low priced rifle!!!
