Ok, after reading a few threads of guys setting up deer feeders, I finally picked up a Moultrie Pro Hunter feeder kit. I picked up a 30gal drum from work, so all I need now is to attach the motor to the drum. My question is are you guys filling it up with just corn, or some kind of feed pellets ( like you see at the zoo) ??? Also, did you build some kind of tri pod for it, or hang it with a cable/rope from a tree ????

If you go to a feed store, some will have "deer feed" other willl use milking cow feed. Corn is one of the ingredients as well as pellets and grains.

I did not say "baiting" I said putting feed out months before the season to get the deer to stay in the area. I simply asked what other members use in their feeders ( and many use feeders here) was not looking to start up a feeding debate.

Corn and oats works good. And feeding deer imho has everything to do with hunting, all winter every time my 4 year old daughter looks out the window and sees a deer at the feeder she asks ''Dad can we shoot him next year?''

Perfect answer. Putting feed out and waiting till a Deer comes along would be Deer shooting as opposed to hunting

So what? (where legal)think the deer cares either way? What is wrong with shooting a broad side still deer with it's head down? Plus people put "bait" where they know it is 100% safe to shoot and usually own the land. Deer shot over feed do not come through little old ladies windshields.

Around here the question is'nt what to feed the deer it is what to do to keep them from destroying the agricultural industry.

Do you have any idea what its like to hunt in Southern Quebec?

Do you know how much work goes into proper baiting?

What's the difference between a guy hunting a bait site or a guy hunting along a scrape line?

We've been baiting now prior and during the deer season for quite a few years. Sure does will visit during the earlier and later part of the day, but I have not had one buck come in during the rifle season while I was on stand! The bucks know the danger that may be involved and will just wait until it's dark. So outside of making them nice and fat and keeping them somewhat in the area, there isn't much of an advantage... especially if every other joker out there is doing the same thing!

Our area is mainly large tracts of forests so deer are sparse and not as concentrated in one area. Whereas on farmland you can make stands along fields and travelling routes to and from the field(food source). Aren't these fields not just large baiting areas? I'd even say this was a far easier form of hunting than throwing some apples, corn, carrots, or deer feed in the middle of a forest. Deer know this is an unnatural human scented food source and take care when approaching this little specific spot. The least little wiff of human scent keeps them away or makes them go nocturnal.

A good point is brought about hunters who hunt on farm land tagging their deer as they are coming and going from corn or alfalfa fields. Hanging a deer feeder is no different than hunting a field or food plot.

Now, back to my electric feeder. I did not realize the motor was going to spin so dam fast, so I imagine when hard dry corn hits the spinning metal plate, its going to make a considerable amount of noise. Should I be putting this feeder out as soon as possible as to get the deer used to the sound ?????

What do you call as soon as possible? They will get used to the noise within a week...and be looking forward to it everytime thereafter! Deer are curious animals, they will come to the noise eventually to check out what the rucas was and will soon learn it means dinner!

That is true about the noise, I remember a few years ago when I was installing a back window on my tree stand, and was using my cordless drill, and I felt someone was watching me, and it was a nice 6 pointer lol My buddies were bugging me if I was going to use the drill as a call that season.

No differant than I suppose,,,,, what bears!

This is your post on another thread

Will be trying to plant a mini food plot this year for deer. However if I soon dont get it in the ground, that wont happen either.

I do not see the difference between my putting out a corn feeder and you growing a food plot. Care to elaborate on that.

Whole corn is the best for an auto feeder. Don't worry about the noise, they'll come when they here it.:)

I have a feeder, and although I haven't used it in a while, I generally only run it in the winter as a supplement. Corn in the summer/fall is a waste of your money, as there is plenty of food around for the deer.

I've never been one to put apples out either, as there's so many apple trees around, the deer don't care about my little pile...

We use a mixture of crushed corn, crushed oats and molasses .
A local farmer sells tons of this stuff.
If we don't put out feed after the alfalfa is cut off the fields, the majority of the resident deer will go to where the goodies are(to where the other landowners are putting out deer feed .)
"Putting feed out and waiting till a Deer comes along would be Deer shooting as opposed to hunting" ....and I do it in the comfort of a heated elevated shooting shack .

I been using whole corn also, LOL but seem to have only attracted a big black bear who decided to empty my drum by spinning the spin plate on the motor lol and he bent the dam plate in half. I got my replacement spin plate today, and will be moving the feeder to the other side of the property since according to my trail cam only one deer and a fawn been hangin around. Dam bear seems to have kept the deer away. Deer there are not used to bear in this area, and everyone in the area keeps telling me there are no bear in the around, yet I have a bunch of pics proving otherwise. I surprised a few local folks with the pics.
