Are there any Niagara area deer hunters out there who care to comment on the season so far?

This might just be a case of where I am hunting but I have never seen it so bad as it has been this year. I have gone through dozens of bush lots in south Niagara and there is very little or no sign at all. Maybe they are hanging in the corn longer than normal or the population is really down. Your take?

I think they are mostly just bedded down in the standing corn. No need to move as they can eat and then bed right down in the same place. It has been a rainy fall and much of the corn is still standing near me as too wet to cut it. This is as of Dec 10th. I have a 100 acre bush lot lot surrounded by corn and soya fields, and have seen very few deer this year since the middle of October (once the corn ripened) on my property. My wife and I took a nice doe in mid October with a bow, but since then only seen 1 other deer on the property. Have also picked up a few moving through at night on the trail cams, but not as many as usual. Hopefully the corn will be down soon, and I will have an opportunity over xmas to bag a buck. Good luck to you as well. Cheers, GR

They are still around. I had five run across in front of me on Webber road last week and had two walk within ten yards of me up in Binbrook when I was hunting Coyotes. lots of sign too. Now I just need a new hunting spot for next season.

Thanks for the replies. I think Bullmoose1 summed it up as just this past week or two they have really shown up in decent numbers. Coincides with the last of the corn going down in the areas I am hunting. Still appears a little on the low side compared to years past. Will be putting in tree time over the holidays. Good luck to you all.

The deer have altered their habits, you have not. This is why you're not seeing sign and is something many hunters are guilty of...hunting where the game isn't. You need to start thinking outside the box to really see where they're hanging out and why. Start by intentionally avoiding areas you'd normally hunt or scout and start looking at places where "nobody" hunts and you'll likely be quite surprised, especially if it's public or pressured land where the deer alter their habits to avoid hunters. The controlled hunts can really screw up deer patterns for a couple weeks each hunt.

It's amazing how many deer will hangout in a tiny 50x100 yard strip of bush, 25 yard wide strip of bush running along a creek, tiny little 1-2 acre "islands" of bush, swamps where nobody hunts, or even thickets beside lane ways where hunters park and walk in. They do not disappear and they do not live exclusively in standing corn, you just need to figure them out.

Also, spend more time on the ground still hunting and stopping every few hundred yards to call and sit for 45-60 minutes. You'll see way more deer, find more sign, learn more about your prey, and have a lot more fun.
