deer hunting tips for a novice?

hey all, just did my first day of hunting on the weekend and I know jack shiit. I kinda wish my hunting course was more about tactics as opposed to legalities and what kind of bow is what.

I went out and got myself some camo and my hunters orange (got my .45 muzzleloader, as well.)

Really, what else do I need to find myself some deer? I have no clue in regards to scents, baits, and what not.

Cheers :D
If you have a good spot where deer are moving through, you dont need scents or bait or other gimmicks, just a good old 303 or 30-30 to get things in youre favour.

indeed some good advice here. I consider my self a new hunter as there is so much I still have to learn too. I'm having a hard time deciding which tips to pass on.
First wisdom, it doesn't find the deer but makes you a better hunter: Read all you can and listen to many, there is great value in knowledge, and everyone offers something from a different perspective, and through their own experience, but it is using this gained knowledge while gaining your own experience that you will learn the most.
Hunting basics: Know your limitations, don't wear nylon or denim, and learn how to dress your own kill.
Hunting tips: Patience is important, but on a cold snowy morning freezing my ass off in a tree stand isn't going to work for me. If you choose to stalk through the bush behave and sound as much like a deer as possible, that means take short erratic steps (they have 4 legs to your two) a human gate is a dead giveaway. Lift your feet with each step, and when in leaves walk toe to heel. When you stop and look around (frequently) crouch down for a deer's POV too. Deer are curious, even if they bust you they likely wont go far at first. Stop and be still, they may well come back to investigate if you've only spooked them. One trick that has worked well for me is to puff and snort softly when I've been busted, it mimics alarm and unease that deer will experience and communicate. Makes it appear as you are also a deer and have been set at alert too. I learned this one when I stalked into a day bed with 3 young bucks, and god badly busted. The snorted and puffed and I mimicked for 5 minutes, none left until I finally took my shot (and then only two left).

Have fun and be safe.

Hunting is 90% location. The most consistantly successful hunters have learned to find, recognize and get access to the best areas, utilizeing it to the best effect is almost fine tuneing.

The similarities between good deer hunting areas and a good fishing spot are uncanny.

A few bits of advice..

Just like Humans, deer hate walking through thick brush.. they will find/make paths through the heavy brush.. look to setup where you can find them.

every time you "pack it in" on the stand, take a very good look around.. I've had a few times, where I've said that's it, and I stand up.. a a deer where there.. where I couldn't see it, but it just saw me..

you WILL run into deer on the way to and from the stand. if it's dark, then may still come back if they have not scented you. if it's just noise, then I've had some come back 30-45 mins later.. if it's day time.. take your time going out to your stand.. you might get a shot at one (assuming it's firearm hunting)

get a GOOD pair of boots / socks.. nothing sucks more than having cold feet on the stand.

I like to take a book with me for the stand.. help to keep me silent and not moving around. I can still look up every page and scan slowly..

1 promising sound you hear, 10% it's a deer, if you hear a second 60%.. 3rd then bingo.. you may not be able to see it. but it's there.. be patient.. it can take up to 30 mins after the first good sound for it to come slowly walking out..

don't take the first shot unless you absolutely have to. take your time. and make sure you scan around.. where there is one deer, there are more..

make a sound like a sheep when you are getting ready to shoot "Baaaa.. " puts the head up, makes the drre stop moving, and gets you a nice shot.

Deer shot directly in the heart run further then ones shot higher up in the spine. I've had one with a hole in the heart go 100 yards, but the spine shot (not, intentional, and IMO a riskier shot) can drop right where it it.. its just weird that way.

There are idiot hunters out there everywhere, you can't trust them to have the common sense to not shoot at the first sound they hear.. be vary careful, and dress head toe in orange.

don't take too much gear/clothes.. your first instinct will be to take as much as you can, but over time you will learn what you really need (the minimum.. less to carry in/out, make noise, and less effort)

spend money on a good backpack to carry your stuff, you will need it.

hope that helps..

Even when you are in your tree stand you need to stay as still as you can. Only move slowly. And squirrels make enough noise to wake the dead so get used to the noisey buggers so you aren't snapping your head around to look at them. Good luck and watch your scent control.
