deer hunting with a shotgun?

I'll be running my mossberg with rifled barrel and Remington Copper Solids for the controlled hunt this year. Shoots 2" groups at 100 yds with open sights.

Has anyone ever hunted deer with a shotgun? What ammunition would you use? Or is this just nuts?

Why would it be nuts ??? I have put a deer down with buckshot at about 80 yards with one pellet going into the lungs, but I wouldn't recommend it... I now only use slugs... Can kill a deer out to 100 yards easy.. A shotgun is an excellent hunting weapon imo...

My Savage 210F bolt action 12 gauge slug gun, with 26inch barrel, currently shoots a tight ragged hole with 3 shots at 100 yards... And a 3 shots touching group at 200yards...no jokes..... and its with Hornady SST sabots... It also likes the Dual Bonds... Which IMHO is a powerhouse slug at longer ranges. Also using a Leupold Ultimate Slam shotgun/muzzleloader scope.

Only reason I own this...is that for a good portion of the season I hunt on private land in the shotgun zone by Edmonton, where there is alot of problem deer, grain fed problem deer....yummy

A lot of places in southern Ontario are shotgun only and has been for as long as I can remember. When used at proper ranges a slug is very effective and with Sabot slugs and rifled barrels becoming more popular 200 yard shots are not out of the question.

Mossberg 930 with rifled slug barrel, topped with a Bushnell TRS-25 for this years controlled hunt.

3 shot clover leaf groups at 50m so far.

Still gotta test it out to 100, as I'm not ready to stop clay shooting yet, but things look promising.

How far of a distance (if any at all) does the deer usually go after be hit?????????

Buck shot at ranges like that has wounded many a deer I would guess.

A good slug gun will not let you down, though.

One of my shotguns is a 870 super mag, I can take the +6 extension I use for 3 gun and ####s and giggle off and have a decent buckshot gun. A 3.5" shell has 18 OO buck in it and I put most of them on a pizza box at 30-35 yards when I saw what they actually did. I think 40-50 yards would be acceptable with 18 pellets in my gun.. it has a 26" mod choke.

my 50-100 yard gun is a marlin 1895 with 500gr soft cast at ~1600.

Deer here aren't far away.

I had a mulie doe drop on the spot. I also had a buck... Be literally picked up off his feet.. Fell to the ground got up and ran a short distance... Which I don't know how... As the dual bond slug cut his heart in half....other than it holding together by an inch or so of muscle. Damn bastard had spirit I tell ya!

Slug guns are great... But very easily plastic foul...... I have to clean mine every 4 shots to keep the accuracy.

That's just nuts, no way you could hit a deer with a shotgun, they are for ducks and zombies only!!! :p

In the 20 years I have been hunting deer with a shotgun, I have only gone a few years without getting one. They are effective if you can shoot. Get out and pratice, and you'll be enjoying steak and potatoes.

Well I have seen them fall in their tracks, and I have seen them run. Whitetails, seem to have the ability to go on nothing but adrenaline. I have seen them go several hundred yards with no heart or lungs, and you scratch your head wondering how they did it, and I have seen them drop with a gut shot, and you wonder why your not tracking them.
