I was thinking of calling the MNR up in the Kenora district, but thought perhaps if someone else may have heard through the grapevine, how the deer have survived the last couple of somewhat harsher winters. I cant imagine too that many people are familiar with that area up there, but hey, you never know! Thnx.

I left Fort Frances last weekend to fish at my buddies cabin on Clearwater, and saw a pile of deer North of Emo---had to dodge several with the truck and must have spotted a total of 20 animals in the 1 hour drive.

We stayed for a couple nights and got into some off the beaten path Trout lakes and saw lots of sign on the portages---LOTS of wolves in the area though---had 2 different packs calling to each other at dusk one evening just at the end of the Walleye bite, and i swear the one pack sounded really close---like about 2 hundred yards close-----very cool!

I think the herd made out okay from what I saw---no evidence of dead ones from starvation----but the snow was pretty deep and I think the wolves had a good hunting season from they're point of view!

Shooting deer up there was tougher than last and next will be tougher than this year.

Deep snow was the communities worst enemy in the winter of 08

My folks still live up there and have never seen so many deer. I get the weekly report when I call home to chat and they routinely have deer passing through their yard (in town).
