A group of us are lucky enough to hunt a large parcel of land outside the Ottawa area. Essentially lots of old derelict farm land surrounded by bush. We're considering planting a small deer plot this spring, nothing too large. Maybe an 1 or 2 acres worth.

Some of the recommendations I've read about (mostly U.S) are to plant Soy, Alfalfa, brassica, clover.

Most important factors are Ease of planting and cost: , we're not looking for something thats going to require too much prep work. Can anyone recommend something that can easily be put down on some lightly tilled soil and will help keep keep deer coming back in the fall?
And a bonus if its something the turkeys love too although I haven't read much on what attracts turkeys.

So i'm basically reaching out to all those farmers in Eastern Ontario, let me know your thoughts

I am kind of in the same boat. Will be starting work on a network of micro plots (since deer like to graze as they meander about to major food fields) but i am still trying to figure out the best stuff to plant. My soil is alkiline to about 7-8ph so i am thinking of going clover (probably red) since it grows in other spots on the property.

I am using a home made drag behind tiller on an atv and a brush cutter. Plus a handheld broadcast spreader. Ithe property i am on with my dad is owned by an elderly man so we cant really plan long term with this spot so we are trying not to invest much money in to the food plot. Just something to have them slow down on the way to and from their bedding area and main food source.

Hopefully someone with some experience might eventually find this thread lol

I am south of Ottawa and have been food plotting for a few years now. If you are using minimal equipment (disc and atv) I would stick to the basics for choice of seed. I have different places to farm/food plot but one that is similar to your intended food plot I have divided into three pieces with clover, alfalfa and turnips with the first two being about an acre each and the turnips being a small plot. The Alfalfa and clover get rotated every two to three years approximately and I have a small plot of usually turnips or forage radishes close to the stand to bring them into bow range. I find this mixture to be simple and to keep deer on the property for most of the year.

Turnips are just starting to come up!

Looks good! Where do you get your seeds from?

Also OP, i hear planting some wheat is good as a cover and also feeds turkey with the grains.

Do anyone of you guys need some young guns to help with heavy lifting and join you on the hunt?

I have access to some good plots for spring turkey hunting, but the landowners wont let us deer hunt cause his cows will be out in the pasture.

I put in for the draw for a friends place 2 and a half hours east of O-town, which is a bit too much of a hike to help with chores. looking for something closer to home.

I have a hunting partner as well and between the two of us we are willing to put some sweat equity into the property. We are also interested in hunting any coyotes or ducks or geese or really anything that would be permitted. Shoot me a PM if you are open to taking some young bucks under your wing. We aren't really young, just novice. And we are self sufficient for gear and transport.
