Deer with a shotgun ?

I don't own a rifle but I would like to hunt deer this coming season. I can effectively put a foster slug down 75 yards using twin beeds into a 4-5 inch group.
I've never hunted deer before. Would that be anywhere near enough or am I pushing my luck ?

Have to try it at the range to find out for sure, it all depends on how it works with your setup. I feel ethical/confident out to 40 yards with a slug in my smoothbore but thats my limit. Maybe think about buying a cheap slug gun? Savage makes a nice one or even a remmington 870 or mossberg combo.
 
I have an 870 and an A400. But only the 870 has twin beads. Slug barrel would be a solution for the 870, I just want to see what other people think about smooth bore slug hunting.
 
i hunt deer with remington 870 that has rifled slug barrel topped with leupold ultimate slam. Use 3" remington acutip.
It is just amazing for the accuracy. I shoot deer from 20 to over 100 yards with confidence. Feel like i am hunting with a rifle.



If you already have 870 find a rifled barrel and be done with it. IMO

If your already confident in your current set-up why change anything now?
Get out and give it a little more than ''the ole college try'' and if that fails then maybe then a barrel change is in order.
A big hole in the vitals within 4 or 5 inches is either a clean miss or big hit and eventually the deer will succumb to the wound.

My experience with slugs guns was shooting rocks at varying distances and after a box or three felt if I had an opportunity any deer out to 60 yrds was a viable opportunity and coyotes where definitely going to be worrying about their safety beyond 60 yrds.

Most of the deer I have shot have been within 50 yards. Many were within 25 yards. I like to sit above a trail or hillside and wait for a deer to dinky donk along. Shot are close, relaxed and well aimed. Only one shot was "long" - at 125 yards. I would be very confident using your shotgun and would have only had to pass up one shot.
 
ive hunted with foster slugs from a smoothbore all I can say is don't push you're limit. rifled slug barrels don't belong on shotguns id you need something rifled grab a rifle

don't need hollow points they are roughly .690"-.715" and pure lead depending on brand for slugs I also don't like hot rodded slugs 1300 to 1400 fps is a good place to be anything too fast and pure lead slugs will flatten out too fast break apart
 
You anwered your own question. If you have to mark your yardage and stick within that range. As some have said, if you want the extra range look into the barrel and slugs that will allow you that little extra. When I comes to slug barrels I have always had the longer is better theory but on the most part like Remington and Mossberg only produce a 20 -23 in barrel anyway.

I know that slug barrels are funny and have seen bad barrels right out of the box, so if you have any grouping problems at the range with different slug types, target the barrel because it may just not be any good...

Controlled deer hunts are only shotgun or muzzleloader so on option to hunt with the rifle!.
 
I have a Winchester 1300 with a rifled slug choke and a red dot. Works great, but I've never took a shot over 50y in the woods.
