I am not pretending to do benchrest shooting. I am using what could be termed a benchrest, but the rifle is not sand bagged, just on a rest while I try to hold the cross hairs in the middle of the aiming mark while I squeeze it off. Unfortunately, I can never hold it so still that I can't see movement, but after all it is the lever action Marlin, 45-70, not suppposed to be prescision rifle.
I had loaded five, 420 grain bullets with gas check and five plain base, no gas check, also 420 grains. The load was 45 grains of IMR 4895, a rather light load, maybe close to 1600 fps. The target was at 100 metres.
The holes with pen marks around them were the first five with gas check. I then shot the five plain base over them. My white aiming mark is 3½ inches square for my low power scope, but a 2¼ inch square will completely cover all holes.
The five plain base made a 1¼ inch, centre to centre group, while the gas check made about 2¼. This is not to say the plain base are best, it only shows I shot better the second time. In fact, I was alone, and I actually said "damn," outloud as a shot went off when the hairs had moved right and up, just where one is.
All in all, I sure like that new Marlin!!
