A word of caution, that one has been "personalized". You should have seen the other two before they sold at $1800 each. I tried to buy both but someone beat me to it by minutes :(

A revolutionary new product called "Plastic Wood" will be needed to fill the nail holes where someones name was inscribed in a dot matrix pattern in the wood.

Be that as it may, there's a reason Jean priced the first two at $1800 (this one was first listed at 1800) and then lowered it to $1600.

I offered him $1400 plus tax and ship for it and he did not accept, FWIW.

It's not worth a penny more than that to me with the damage to the stock.

I think that to me it would add to it. His name is boldly spelled on it. You may even b able to find out where this man's unit had been, maybe possible to kinda narrow down where the rifle was captured. If it is real and that's the vet who brought it backs name I think that makes it a special piece for that reason alone. It wouldn't make me pay more for it but $200 less, then maybe!

It's all relative. Personally I wouldn't pay a nickel for any K98. Especially after my best buddies dad (WW2 vet) freaked out when someone driving a Harley was wearing a Nazi looking helmet. Owning anything built/used by them has way to much bad juju for me. I have passed on tons of nice K98's here. YMMV. ;)

One of my great grand fathers was also killed in action by the Germans in 1944 in Romania.
The story was that he was running across a open field and a German plane came over and dropped a few bombs and the shrapnel killed him.

I still have respect for the Germans because it was thier duty to fight for the fuhrer.

Even though my great grand father was killed by ther Germans i still collect the enemy's rifles and equipment.

His head would explode if he saw what I wear quading/camping then.

I understand people liking the vets personal touch. But what I strive for is as close to factory original as possible. I understand history has value, but you all we know someone added that name since the war. Buy the rifle not the story, and to me that ditracts from the monetary value.

Maybe if you can prove the providence. Could have been added post war also by a previous owner. Really hard to know for sure.

I agree, probably still a little steep but someone who is not too picky may buy this one. I would have been interested to see the other ones as well.

The dot pattern is all history imo, same as a duffle cut or battle damage.

If you value an item, you take are of it. How many people permanently deface their current firearms with their name? Scratch their name into their TV or car? How many vet bring backs from Afghanistan are defaced? My point is there is no enhanced history or benefit to doing what has been done to this K98. Then or now or ever, it's vandalism.

LOL i wear a spanish m42 helmet with a german splinter on it for quading too:rockOn:

Finnish M42 with Oak Leaf pattern A cover and a Blurred Edge pattern Anorak. Both reversible summer/fall colours.

I guess I can see your point. I think one thing that is bugging me is whether it was the vet who did that or someone later on in the collector market either as a personal emblem or to increase value ? I seriously hope it is not the latter.

I doubt it would be done to increase collector value, more likely just someone had a bad idea to put their name on it. I have seen a few other nice milsurps named post war. Recently saw a 1918 matching DWM luger with a post war name added in electropencil, otherwise it was nice, pretty common flaw found on milsurps, unfortunately.

I could see myself doing that if it was a momento of where it came from. It would be what that piece meant to that vet, not collector value 75yrs later. If I wanted to make sure someone didn't ewant it, I'd see myself doing it for sure.

But I wouldn't buy it for that name poked on it, it would be an interesting point of research for after you buy the rifle for what it is. Just like any obcure markings on an otherwise regular looking piece. That to me is what makes buying a new rifle fun, never knowing what history you will find.
