I need a new rifle :D for silhouette shooting. I am going with 10/22. I would appreciate any suggestions as for what is the best 10/22 model to go with? What scope to put on it (50 to 350 yards)? What stock/barrel/trigger group/other accessories I may need to consider right of the bat? It should be relatively light weighted after all the mods are done and finished so I can shoot it from the standing position w/o using a bipod.

Thanks in advance.

ps silhouette shooting is F.U.N!!! :D

I have shot silhouette for a couple years and have never seen someone using a semiauto. usually most people use bolt action CZ's or anschutz rifles topped with leupold glass. i think if you were going to use a 10/22 you would want something with a heavy target barrel, maybe a custom bullberry. that is if you are going to get serious about it. whatever the case it wont be stock thats for sure. trying to shoot a lightweight 18.5" barrel offhand is not easy at long range.
if you insist on the ruger it would be a basic 10/22 that is heavily modified for silhouette to even come close to keeping up with the inherent accuracy of the higher end bolt guns in the silhouette scene. My .02c it would not be my first choice for that purpose. and to be honest i doubt you would hit a ford one ton at 350yds with a 10/22 no matter what scope you have on it.

Consideration may want to be given to barrel profile as heavy non tapered barrels are not allowed in hunting rifle class. If you are configuring the rifle for use in both Hunter and Standard Rifle, the lower weight limit of 8.5#s including scope is the max. You may want to refer to the full rules to meet other compliances.Trigger weight, stock dimensions etc. NRA website has the full rules in pdf format. Steelchickens.com has lots of info on the game also.
The 10/22 is not one of the preferred platforms for competition but there have been exceptions. Cheers and enjoy the sport !

Thank you, guys! Yes, this is what people shoot - CZ and anschutz - bolt. :) I tried to shoot my SR-22 and it was horrible. It was super heavy and awkward to shoot. However, I tried 10/22 a while ago and loved it. Plus there are so many after market accessories available so I thought I will go for it. Also, the price on basic 10/22 3x as cheap as for CZ452. Well, I will definitely try research some more however I may be will go with used Anschutz with Leupold for silhouette after all.

Better yet look into a marlin 925 bolt action. they're under $250 and i used one for silhouette for a year and it kept up just fine. very very accurate rifle for the money and definately well suited as a lower cost silhouette rifle. the trigger can also easily be modified at home with a papermate pen spring to give you a trigger pull that is IMHO lighter and cleaner than a factory CZ.

I guarantee, even after spending a small fortune upgrading the crap out of a inexpensive 10/22, you will one day dump it and buy a good bolt rifle, wishing you'd have done it in the first place. This is assuming you get hooked by the sport.

I have only seen 10/22 used twice in serious competition. They were "O.K' but the owners did as mentioned above. Also the brass casing flinging at other shooters can be annoying.

You can find CIL/Anschutz on the EE for the 300-450 range, that's way cheaper then your 10/22 option. If you are absolutely stuck on semi go for a 597 and VQ hammer.

Thank you guys SO SO much! You are right. I need to stop dreaming and get realistic. Bolt rifle is definitely a solution *sigh*. I just don't have a huge budget right know and I really would like to have something suitable to shoot silhoutte. I will hit gunstores this weekend - will try to handle all those guns you mentioned to check which one feels the best in my hands. I promise to stay away from another semi-auto. :p

As for buying a used one - I am a complete noob and I am affraid to buy a gun that I don't know the history behind it nor I can check it properly because I don't know what to check in the first place. So, at this point, I can only buy new and be somewhat confident that at least nobody messed around with it (only factory, lol).

if you are looking at a bolt action, check out the savage mark 2 with accutrigger and heavy barrel for about the same price as a 10/22.

I'll second that. for your purposes either a savage mark 2 or a marlin 925 would be the gun to buy. i prefer the marlin because im a marlin man and no other reason. but then again im also a tinkerer and shadetree gunsmith so i did alot of work floating the barrel, bedding the action, and a trigger job to make it more of a match rifle. out of the box the savage mark 2 will be best choice for a beginner because the barrel is already floated and the accutrigger is easily adjustable down to 2.5lbs with a simple tool that is included with the purchase of the gun. i could be wrong but i believe the mark 2 also comes equipped with scope bases which would be a big plus!

Just show up with what you got at proper silhouette matches. Lots of the avid shooters have perfectly suitable rifles gathering dust in their cabinets. Show some interest, get the word out and you'll probably get a great deal on a CZ, Brno, CIL or something along those lines.

Exactly, not much you can do to fug up a .22 bolt gun. My CIL 190 was born some time in the 70's and I have no idea how many owners there were before me. It shoots perfect. IMO you are better off with a used quality gun then one of these newer guns. I've handled new savage/marlin/winchesters none compare to my old CIL as far as trigger, bolt throw, and I'd bet accuracy.

Here's an example... Not mine, no affiliation.
