You need a different buffer tube/spring/buffer for the 'carbine' stock (if I understand your question) is all.

Generally speaking, a longer barrel gives better functioning. Things like H and H2 buffers were developed to overcome problems with excessive gas pressure in short barrels. You should be fine with a 20" regardless of buffer.

The CF run collapsible stocks on their 20" guns. Its not a problem. In fact, an adjustable stock is a very smart idea. The fixed stock on the Ar platform is too long for most people.
