I understand the original M3s were select fire (Like the M2) and were intended to be used as perimeter defense rifles at night, mainly as a way of detecting and destroying infiltrators.

Night vision technology has definitely come a long ways since WWII. It has certainly gotten less fragile and cumbersome.
 
M3's were used in Korea in the 1950's. The infrared lamp was originally mounted under the barrel, like your mount. But it was moved to the top of the scope because the "bush" got in the way. Compared to an ANPVS-4 2nd gen mounted on an m14 or m16, these are crude, but they did the job they were built for in the 50's and 60's.
