I posted this thread in rimfire as well and Im duplicating it here to get the most info!!!

I've been Doing tons of research on here and am having a hell of a time deciding what scope I want to use on my new 10/22 build.

The main purpose of this build is to have an accurate semi that I can hunt grouse with, and do some somewhat long range target practice, 200 yards ish. Here's the plan:

Ruger receiver and bolt with VQ extractor, Dlask 16" bullbarrel and hogue over mold stock. Teir 1 trigger job with 2.5 lb pull via brimstone gun smithing.

Now Here's Where I need help. I'm thinking of Something along the lines of a 4-12x40 with AO. I have used 3-9x40 before on a .270 but magnification seems weak @ 100 yards, and I have perfect vision. Can you effectively use a 4-12 for close range around the 10-25 yard grouse sweet spot, or will I be struggling to get them in my field of view?

Secondly people say that AO causes blurrage if not adjusted for the correct range, and others say that it doesn't. So what crowd is confused here? I'm also leaning towards a vortex crossfire II as I want the best quality optic in that magnification(if it's effective) for a price tag of around 2 bills.

I would consider buying a 3-9 but I also want something that I can see hit @ 100+.

Cheers gents
