I know it's early for the 2026 waterfowl thread but spring snow goose season will be opening in about 60 days or so and I know MB and a few other places have their seasons still going or nuisance seasons opening soon as well.
We are starting 2026 by installing hen houses through our local Delta Waterfowl chapter.
Another 30 put out yesterday brought our total new structures installed for this winter to 80.
We have so much snow this year it ruled out using the quads unless we put track kits on them. My hunting partner ended up buying a new $13,000 snowmobile so he could honour his committment to Delta putting out 200 hen houses this winter.
Its tough slugging for an out of shape 62 year old duck & goose hunter(me) but we are getting there.
So far 60 of the first 100 we put out last year have been checked and any that were installed that ended up high and dry were not successfully used but those that had water under them were. Success so far is running just a hair over 50% of successful nests(hatched eggs in them).
The weather is supposed to co-operate this week with mild temps so the push is on to take advantage before temps plummet to sub-freezing again. We are going to stage another 40 on a large slough tomorrow, 10 on two smalls sloughs on the same property then we are going to get the remainder staged on a few other spots so we can get the 200 done in the next week or so. Then we can focus on the remaining 40 houses from last years install to check them, do any necessary repairs and see if they had successful nests.
I wanted to fly my drone today to take video and aerial photos of the houses on the sloughs but it was too windy to fly. I'll do that another day.
Here are a few pics from yesterday.

We wrapped the winter hen house season up installing 154 houses this year and replacing 13 of the 100 we put out last year that due to inferior materials were unable to withstand being used as perches for Giant Canadas. Today was interesting swapping out the crushed houses. We discovered that one of them had mallard eggs in it that obviously did not hatch due to the hen being squeezed out by a chubby ass goose and two more had regurgitated owl pellets stuck to them so obviously the owls like using them as a perch as well. Of the 16 remaining on the slough that survived last years nesting season 8 had successful nests. The bios tell us if 50% get used first year that is doing well. Hopefully with the newer stronger structures in place we'll see a higher success rate this season. Our total ready for this spring is 254. Hopefully we can help mother nature add 1000+ mallards to the fall flight from our local area. Here are some pics from todays outing.IMG_1416.jpegIMG_1418.jpegIMG_1422.jpegIMG_1421.jpegIMG_1424.jpeg294495910087953679.jpegIMG_1427.jpegIMG_1428.jpegIMG_1433.jpegIMG_1426.jpeg
