Finished a beat up Steyr stock with DEM BART continental finishing oil. Left the jar sealed but the oil developed a skin and turned to jelly below. Added about 15% turpentine and it mixed in not too badly. Would it still work? I don't want to take a chance on the next project. Any experience with this? Thanks...YT

I have never worked with Dem Bart oil specifically. I would suggest trying the current mixture on some scrap wood to see how it dries, does it dry to the same consistency as the original, harder or softer? Best advice I can offer.

I think your oil oxidized thence the hard skin & jelly. I had it happen and when it does there's no going back.
After diluting as you did the oil would just not dry (as in cure). Do as mrg suggest and try it on something
as see what happens. --- John

I have had the same thing happen with Tru-Oil and with Danish Oil and was unable to resurrect either one with turpentine or varsol. I think you are out of luck.

Almost any quick drying oil will do the same, this type of oil "cures" rather than dries.
I got some small vials (bottles) and filled them, This way I don't expose the whole bottle
at each opening. Hopefully that will pan out over time. I suppose doing the pouring in
a nitrogen atmosphere would help. Had the facilities to do this at one time before retirement.
FWIW --- John

Thanks for the comments. I applied some and it almost dried overnight. Sufficient that I could buff it up with fine steel wool. However considering the amount of time spent finishing a stock I think I'll invest in a new bottle.
