What is the depth that a company has to imprint the name and serial number on a frame? I have a bunch of Cooey .22s with no company serial number just the CFC stick on things, can I use an electric pencil and engrave the number on the gun or do I have to stamp it to a certain depth. I read somewhere that the U.S. has to have the number stamped , and the name can be electrically etched, does Canada have a similar rule/law.

I would suggest staying with the stickies. They don't add to the appearance, but neither does amateur stamping or engraving.

my three cooeys from Winchester, Cobourg do not have any serial #s . They are all registered by description and barrel length. Back in the day, serial numbers were not required on small caliber rifles. I would never mar a gun with any permanent marking.

All I want to know is how deep must an ingraved or stamped serial number be. The only site I found was a U.S. one which states it must be .003 in. deep. I would guess since we import U.S. guns ,that would also be acceptable in Canada. But I was looking for an official Canadian site or source.

If you look at some of the Enfield jungle carbines, you will see how most of them are serialed very lightly with the electro-pencil. Some of the Norinco M14s/M305 receivers are also very lightly struck. I'm sure there are more examples. It just has to be a permanent marking.

My opinion has no basis in actual law, it's just what I've seen throughout the years.
